Houston Methodist Establishes Partnerships Across the Globe, Including Valiant Clinic in Dubai
|
Valiant Clinic was established in part to support the Dubai Medical Tourism Strategy to attract 500,000 medical tourists to the emirate by 2020. Houston Methodist brings an international standard of excellence to the operations. Through Valiant's close partnership with Houston Methodist, the Clinic is able to receive expert radiology support on specialty images through state-of-the-art teleradiology technology.
Cathy Easter, President and Chief Executive Officer of Houston Methodist Global Health Care Services, commented on the Clinic's opening: “We are committed to improving the health of the world community through sharing our innovative, personalized patient care and health care expertise, as well as standards of clinical service excellence."

MD Anderson Cancer Center Reduces the Toll of Cervical Cancer Worldwide via Telementoring Programs
|
Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide and was responsible for approximately 266,000 deaths in 2012, according to the World Health Organization. In contrast, it’s relatively rare in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that only 12,990 cases will be diagnosed this year, ranking it 11th among cancers affecting U.S. women.
To address disparities in cancer care around the world, MD Anderson is using Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes), a tele-mentoring model developed at the University of New Mexico in 2003. The model uses video conferencing to pair specialists at academic medical centers with health care providers in underserved areas.
Through Project ECHO, MD Anderson faculty train community health workers on how to educate women about the importance of cervical cancer screening and vaccination for the human papillomavirus (HPV). Providers in underserved areas, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and midwives, are taught to manage abnormal screening results to prevent cervical cancer.

Cook Children's Health Care System's First Cardiac Patient to Benefit from 3D Printing Technology
|
Cook Children's 3D aPPROaCH Lab allows cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons the ability to fully understand a patient's complex heart defect and plan their procedures and surgeries to the finest of details. It also allows for doctors to practice and perform procedures prior to the patient entering the operating room. This is accomplished through the use of both 3D virtual viewing and 3D printing.
Cook Children's is one of the only pediatric healthcare facilities in the United States to combine these technologies.

CHI St. Luke’s Surgeon Restores Function and Quality of Life After Performing Specialized Triple Valve Replacement
|
After having two back surgeries in 2016, 65-year-old Steve Simpson wasn’t thrilled about having heart surgery in February 2017. Luckily, when his doctors rushed him from College Station to Houston for the procedure, he was treated by a new doctor in town who specializes in minimally invasive heart procedures—Joseph Lamelas, MD.
Expert Care Lamelas, Associate Chief of cardiac surgery in the division of cardiothoracic surgery, joined Baylor College of Medicine in January 2017, and performs surgeries at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. Internationally recognized as an expert in the field of minimally invasive heart surgery, Lamelas has completed more than 14,000 cardiac surgical operations over his 26-year career, and is the world’s most experienced minimally invasive cardiac surgeon. "In January 2017 I completed my two-year term as US Science Envoy, a program established by the Obama Administration. My major activities were focused on vaccine diplomacy and building capacity in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region for developing new vaccines against neglected and emerging infections. The urgency for these vaccines reflects a growing awareness that civil and international conflicts create conditions that favor the rise of new diseases and the reappearance of old diseases...
In response, our Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development (Texas Children’s CVD), the research arm of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, expanded its product development partnership model and has embarked on substantive vaccine development collaborations with research institutions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including a joint capacity building initiative with King Saud University."

The population of people with diabetes is expected to increase by 65% by 2025. Since treatments for diabetes is the most expensive disease to treat long term, this will result in significantly higher total health expenditures worldwide, especially the Middle East region. The diabetes epidemic is driven by several factors, including high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol and high triglycerides, obesity and lack of physical activities.
Since type 2 diabetes prevention and treatments include careful monitoring of food intake (quantity and quality) with the addition of physical activity, alternative treatments are necessary for people to adapt in order to fit their lifestyle. The growth of the diabetes epidemic can be controlled by changing the environment in which people make lifestyle decisions, along with greater public awareness of the top risk factors for the disease. The Bilateral Chamber is proud to be the Strategic Partner of Kallman Worldwide, official organizer of the U.S. Pavilion at Arab Health.
This year’s Arab Health featured an additional 400 exhibitors, with 4,400 companies showcasing their latest innovations to 110,000+ attendees from over 70 countries. The event saw the introduction of the new Hands-on-Training (HoT) sessions, which allow more than 900 physicians, surgeons and technicians from the region to learn and practice new techniques using state-of-the-art equipment for specialized treatments in areas such as cardiology, neurology, surgery, gastroenterology, urology, oncology and radiology.
These novel training tracks aim to support the need for more specialized medical training in the region, and bridge the gap between advanced medical techniques and regional expertise.
