A Note from the Director
 Welcome to the first newsletter for 2019. Though only a few months into the new year, we already have outstanding achievements in research, engagement and impact to celebrate. A special welcome to new Centre Deputy Directors Huiyun Feng and Duncan McDonnell and many thanks to Renee Jeffery who has stepped down from her role as Deputy for her generous contribution over the last few years.
We are also pleased to congratulate the newly minted Drs Samuel Ankamah, Brad MacConchie and Mike Davis, and wish our best to Beatrice Alupo, Patrick Chang, Anne Hogan, Patrick Keane, Sovinda Po and Melodie Ruwet who have commenced their new adventures as doctoral candidates.

Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) Result
 The Centre has recently celebrated success with the announcement of the ERA for 2018.
Political Science at Griffith University maintained its '5' rating ('well above world standard') it received in the previous 2012 and 2015 rounds. Impressively, Policy and Administration was awarded a '4', ('above world standard'), an advance on the '3' awarded in 2015.
These results are an independent endorsement of the Centre's continuing commitment to collegiality and research excellence.

Engagement and Impact Assessment
 The Australian Research Council has announced the outcomes of the inaugural nation-wide Engagement and Impact (EI) assessment of university research and engagement. This assessment is a companion exercise to the Excellence in Research for Australia to provide a detailed understanding of how Australia's universities and their researchers are collaborating with industry, government, communities and the not-for profit sector. It also represents a national mechanism for understanding how universities are translating their research into economic, environmental, social cultural and other benefits.
The EI assessment provided ratings of High, Medium or Low to assess both engagement and impact for each two-digit Field of Research code. The research of our academic staff played a key role in achieving the impressive results of: 16 (Studies in Human Services); High for Engagement and Medium for Impact. Congratulations to all those involved.

ARC Discovery Grant Success
 Congratulations to Centre members Professor Andrew O'Neil and Dr Ferran Martinez i Coma on their ARC Discovery Success. As there were only seven grants awarded nationally under FoR 1606, the results are commendable.
Dr Martinez i Coma was awarded AUD$248,000 for the project "How can political actors shape voter turnout?". This project aims to investigate the variations on individual's turnout rates by analysing the strategies employed by candidates and parties to mobilise their supporters and demobilise their detractors.
Professor O'Neil was awarded AUD$227,033 for the project "Expectations and commitments in the Australia-USA alliance". He will work as part of a project team with A/Prof Stephan Fruehling (The Australian National University) and Prof Peter Dean (The University of Western Australia).

Research contributes to national security debate in Australia
 Centre member Professor Andrew O'Neil, together with Associate Professor Stephan Fruehling from the Australian National University, has been awarded major Defence Strategic Policy Grants Program funding to undertake the project 'Nuclear Deterrence in US Alliances: Implications for Australia'.
The project focusses on current approaches and thinking about the nuclear umbrella among America's NATO and Northeast Asian allies.

New Research Grant
 Congratulations to Dr Caitlin Mollica on her success in obtaining a Griffith University New Researcher Grant to undertake research on Substantive youth engagement in peacebuilding practices: evaluating the implementation of UN resolution 2250.

Uluru Statement of the Heart - Video of Presentation
 In November 2018, Thomas Mayor presented a special seminar on the Uluru Statement of the Heart.
The event, hosted by the Centre for Government and Public Policy and the Griffith Indigenous Research Unit is released on the Youtube channel and can be viewed by clicking below.

Governing for Integrity
 On 5 April, Professor AJ Brown hosted a seminar and workshop on 'Integrity and Corruption in 2030: What does the future hold?'
Kol Preap from Transparency International Cambodia, delivered a public seminar hosted by the Centre titled 'Fighting Corruption in a Highly Corrupt World: Successes, Resistance + Challenges'. Expert panellists included Professor AJ Brown, Professor Adam Graycar, Dr Radha Ivory from University of Queensland.
The Draft National Integrity System Assessment Report - Governing for Integrity: A Blueprint for Reform is available for comment. Please follow the link below to access the documents. Comments due by 10 May 2019.

Gender Equality Research Network Launch
 An initiative by Associate Professor Sara Davies (GBS) and Associate Professor Sue Harris-Rimmer (AEL), the Gender Equality Research Network was established to enhance and promote gender equality research across the Behavioural Sciences and Humanities. The network was launched on 22 February 2019. Guest speakers Professor Joy Damousi from University of Melbourne, Professors Andrew O'Neil and Andrea Bishop from Griffith University presented and highlighted the importance of such an initiative and in particular the area of gender equality in future research outputs. The pilot program will support a small group of gender scholars by providing opportunities for professional development in career and research areas. Find out all about the Network below.

Nihilism Workshop
 In February 2019, Associate Professor Gideon Baker and Centre Director Professor Haig Patapan welcomed scholars from the Universities of Aberystwyth, Kent, St Andrews, Western Sydney and Deakin for a two-day international workshop on the question of nihilism in international relations.
Papers were presented on topics from 'When Nihilism Appears in the World' to 'Beyond Transcendence and Immanence: Nihilism and Islam'.
Associate Professor Baker will continue to collaborate with colleagues in this new network and hopes to collate a publication that will draw their contributions together in the future.

Recent Publication Releases
 Centre members have again produced outstanding scholarly publications include books and articles on themes as diverse as Containing Contagion to Workplace Justice and Chinese Scholars and Foreign Policy.
Congratulations to Giorel Curran, Sara Davies, Huiyun Feng, Kai He, Duncan McDonnell, Tu Nguyen, Liz van Acker, Annika Werner and Xu Yi-chong on their recent research and publications.

Containing Contagion: The Politics of Disease Outbreaks in Southeast Asia
 Associate Professor Sara Davies has published a new book. Containing Contagion: The Politics of Disease Outbreaks in South East Asia was launched by the Head of the Indo-Pacific Centre for Health Security, Mr Robin Davies at the Australian Institute of International Affairs on 2 April. The book launch was followed by a panel discussion and a question and answer session.
Panellists included Associate Professor Adam Kamradt-Scott, Dr Anna Okello and Dr Meru Sheel. Sara's book is available through Johns Hopkins University Press.

2019 Young Women to Watch in International Affairs
 Congratulations to HDR Candidate Elise Stephenson who was named as one of the 2019 Young Women to Watch in International Affairs.
To celebrate International Women's Day 2019, Young Australians in International Affairs undertook an internal and external research and consultation process to compile a list of Young Women to Watch in International Affairs.
The aim of the list is to shine a spotlight on some of the young Australian women working in the area of international affairs so that their contributions can be recognised and promoted in this field.

Why it must be a feminist global agenda - The Lancet
 According to the paper recently published in a special edition of The Lancet, feminist leadership is about much more than addressing gender quotas. Gender quotas do not go far enough when it comes to tackling Global Health inequalities. It includes both formal and informal culture change, which is needed within institutions across global health governance.
The study highlights that gender bias is prevalent when it comes to global health since women predominantly occupy unpaid roles as caregivers and health workers.
The article was co-authored by Sara Davies, Sophie Harman, Rashida Manjoo, Maria Tanyag and Clare Wenham.
