The AdvancED Georgia 2011 Fall Conference will inspire, create, and accelerate your institution's goals for school improvement.

AdvancED Georgia invites administrators, directors, teachers, and board members from public, non-public, and early learning schools to attend this conference.  Dr. Mark Elgart; Dr. John Barge; and 2012 Georgia Teacher of the Year, Jadum McCarthy, will address the conference.  Other highlights include an introduction to the AdvancED Standards for Quality, and an overview of the new AdvancED Accreditation Process and the Adaptive System of School Improvement Support Tolls (ASSIST), a new web-enabled School Improvement and Accreditation Platform.

The conference will be held at the Marietta Hilton Conference Center, which is located at 500 Powder Springs Street, Marietta, Georgia 30064.  In addition to sessions that will be presented by practitioners, sessions designed to assist schools and districts hosting a Quality Assurance Review (QAR) visit during the 2011-2012 school year will be offered.  For schools and districts hosting a visit during the 2012-2013 school year, sessions regarding the New Standards will be presented (see additional information in the next section). Please direct specific questions regarding the conference to Liz Law at llaw@advanc-ed.org or 770.429.0040.

New AdvancED Standards Unveiled

Just as schools and districts are subject to a rigorous process of review and continuous improvement, so are AdvancED Standards.  In order to comply with the AdvancED policy that requires the AdvancED Standards to be reviewed every five years, a Standards Committee began meeting in the fall of 2009 to review the current Standards, which have been in place since 2007.  This review allowed the Committee to look at current education quality and research, as well as the knowledge gained from everyday application by accredited schools and districts.  As a result of this review, the AdvancED Standards have been rewritten.  The new version includes five Standards:

  1. Purpose and Direction
  2. Governance and Leadership
  3. Teaching and Assessing for Learning
  4. Resources and Support Systems
  5. Using Results for Continuous Improvement
The new Standards will be implemented for the 2012-13 school year, but now are posted for viewing on both of the Accreditation Resources and Tools Web pages for Schools and School Systems.  Select the item labeled 2012-13 school year.  Schools and school systems hosting visits in the 2011-2012 school year will continue to use AdvancED’s current Standards.  If you have questions, please feel free to contact our office.

NWAC Joins AdvancED

The Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC) and AdvancED jointly approved a resolution for the NWAC to become an accreditation division of AdvancED.  The Northwest Accreditation Commission, established in 1917, is one of the six regional accrediting bodies in the United States and serves schools, systems, and education providers in seven states including Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.  NWAC also accredits schools internationally.  By joining together, AdvancED and NWAC will expand their capacity and resources to deliver accreditation and school improvement services throughout the network and provide added support to schools committed to continuous improvement.

With the addition of NWAC, AdvancED now serves nearly 30,000 public and private schools and districts in over 70 countries.  Please feel free to contact our office if you have any questions about this exciting news.
