A Note from the Director
 Welcome to the final Newsletter for 2018.
In this Newsletter we are delighted to celebrate the recent achievements of Centre members, especially Professor AJ Brown's Distinguished Lecture, and Professor Xu's Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences Australia.
But perhaps most gratifying is the success of our young scholars, with the Pat Weller award going to Laura Tyler and special congratulations to our most recent PhDs, Drs Caitlin Mollica, Jacob Deem, Lucy West and Ahmed Al-Dulaimi.

Pat Weller Prize 2018
 Congratulations to Laura Tyler (double degree student - BLaw and BGIR) the 2018 Pat Weller Prize winner for the highest marks in the first year course, Introduction to Politics.
The Award is presented annually to encourage students' academic excellence.
Well done Laura.

2018 Book Launch
 Congratulations to all our Centre members who have published this year.
We acknowledged and celebrated the release of 9 books on a variety of subjects within the political science discipline.
Centre authors included: Gideon Baker, Luis Cabrera, Jack Corbett, Sara Davies, Andrew O'Neil, Huiyun Feng, Kai He, Renee Jeffery, Patrick Weller, Xu Yi-chong.
A special mention to Professor Pat Weller's book , The Prime Ministers' Craft which was named Book of the Week, Times High Education (UK) on 23 August 2018.

Distinguished Lecture 2018
 Professor AJ Brown drew on his extensive research and practical expertise to present this year's School of Government and International Relations Distinguished Lecture: A National Integrity Commission - Options for Australia. AJ presented a new picture of the options for the Commonwealth Government to undertake long overdue strengthening of its public integrity system - drawing on initial results from Australia's second National Integrity System Assessment.

Congratulations Xu Yi-chong
 Professor Yi-chong Xu, has been elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.
Fellows are elected to the Academy by their peers based on a distinguished contribution to one or more of the Social Sciences that has also been recognised internationally. Xu's extensive career as a researcher has focussed on Energy Security, International Organizations and China and Regional Studies. Xu's most recent book with Professor Pat Weller, The Working World of International Organizations, has been published by Oxford University Press.

Uluru Statement of the Heart
 Centre members Professors Ciaran O'Faircheallaigh and Duncan McDonnell combined with the Indigenous Research Unit to present a Special Seminar by Thomas Mayor on the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Thomas shared his insights into the nature of the consensus at Uluru, his travels throughout the nation with the Uluru Statement Canvas, and what all Australia's can do to achieve the Statement's ultimate vision: A Constitutionally Enshrined First Nations Voice and Makarrata.
Elder Bill Buchanan from Reconciliation Queensland and Heron Loban from the Griffith Law School contributed to the seminar.

Grant Success
 Congratulations to Dr Tu Nguyen on her recent Vietnamese government grant. Tu's project, funded by the International Labour Organisation in Vietnam and the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, explores changes and dynamics of industrial relations in the country and provides the ground for improving law and policy practices. Tu will examine the role of labour law in addressing gender discrimination in the garment sector in a southern province.

Collaboration with Tsinghua University
 Professor Haig Patapan recently returned from a successful meeting with Professor Lan Xue, Dean, School of Public Policy and Management, Professor Xufend Zhu, Associate Dean, and Associate Professor Zhilin Liu, Director, Institute of Politics and Public Policy, Tsinghua University.
The discussions held in October canvassed the possibility of joint workshops and symposia, international visits and new exchange programs for the Centre's doctoral students and academics. The potential for collaboration on major research projects was also discussed. The School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University has over 61 faculty members and is considered one of the foremost Policy Schools in China and internationally. The Centre is looking forward to developing and cementing our relationship with the School.

Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters
 Dr Caitlin Mollica recently gave evidence to the touring Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters inquiry into lowering the voting age.
Caitlin and a colleague from QUT, Dr Helen Berents, spoke in support of the voice of the youth in the democratic process.

Australia-Asean Youth Forum (Qld) 2018
 Higher Degree Research student Emilia Yustiningrum joined Australia-Asean Youth Forum (Qld) as a committee expert on natural disaster for year 9-11 students in Kedron State High School in October. The event, organised by the Asia Education Foundation in partnership with the Queensland Department of Education, has engaged 11 high schools across Brisbane to role play as 10 ASEAN member states and Australia. Emilia shared her insights on key issues in ASEAN, guided the students to negotiate the problems of natural disaster at regional levels, and helped solidify the solutions.
