Chapter Dues Reminder

The National Capital Chapter reminds all members that 2017 Chapter dues in the amount of $25.00 may be paid when registering for a Chapter event or by visiting our member portal. Remember, Chapter dues are separate from ASIS International annual dues and are used to support Chapter operations, scholarships and our annual contribution to the ASIS Foundation.

In appreciation for your dues contribution, the ASIS NCC extends special discounts on Chapter meeting and event fees.

Remember,
the connections you make and the intelligence you gather through your ASIS membership will always keep you at the forefront of your profession.

Please note: Dues are valid for the calendar year (January 1-December 31) and are non-refundable.

Chairman's Corner

Greetings!

The National Capital Chapter hosted its annual Security
Educational Fund Scholarship Awards night on April 13th,
honoring the ‘best of the best’ students who applied in our
area. Scholarship Night is a symbol of belief in the continuing pursuit of knowledge, and one way we help support the goals
of a new generation of security professionals. I personally
extend our thanks and gratitude to all our volunteers and contributors who made this evening possible!

I also want to acknowledge our members who support the SEF monthly with the purchase of our 50/50 raffle
tickets (some even donating back their winnings!), and all
those who quietly contribute to the Security Education Fund
when registering online for meeting events. This endeavor
is possible because of you, our members, and your gracious guests!

This year our Security Seminar and Expo will take place
June 14 and will be enhanced with the subject matter of IT and ASIS IT standards. Expert guest speakers are being lined up
for this event so please check your emails for the event notice
soon to be released.

As always, I look forward to meeting with you at a future
ASIS NCC meeting/event!

April Meeting Recap -
The ASIS NCC
Annual Scholarship Night

On April 13th, our  NCC Chapter recognized the academic
achievements of students in security management,
administration of justice and programs allied to security, with
cash scholarships. This has been a tradition of the National Capital Chapter since 1983. It is an important opportunity
for us, as members of a professional society, to make a contribution to the community beyond our own membership.

Scholarship awards were presented by David Gilmore,
CPP,
Academic Programs Coordinator, John Gallagher, Chapter Chair, and Scott Fischer, CPP, PSP, Chapter Vice Chair. The recipients were:

-Gabriel Holley, NOVA Manassas Campus
-Lilian Oviedo, NOVA Woodbridge Campus
-Tyler Figenbaum, George Mason University
-Julianna Rollo, George Mason University
-Meagan Carney, The George Washington University
-Ashaki Jones, Webster University
-Amanda Ross, NVCC Manassas Campus

We were also joined by guest speaker Kevin Peterson,
CPP,
Past Chairman of the Board of The National Partnership
for Careers in Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security,
and a Director and Trustee of our NCC Security Education Foundation.

Kevin provided an introduction to The National Partnership,
the career pipeline concept, and why it is important in
today's world. He also addressed security career paths and the roles of education, experience and certification.

ASIS NCC Young Professionals
Spring Networking Event

YP.00

The ASIS National Capital Chapter Young Professionals held
their Spring Networking Event and Business Card Exchange
in Downtown DC at the W Hotel Pinea Bar last month.

The ASIS Young Professionals group mission is focused on the development and education of young careerists in the security industry. The event was attended by a range of professionals representing industries from Government to Small Business
and Large Corporations.

These networking events are a great way to meet other
members if you are new to the National Capital Chapter or
have not attended an event recently.

A commonly asked question is who should attend a Young Professionals Event. The answer is not an age range; if
you support the mission of the Young Professionals or are
new to the industry you are encouraged to attend a future
event.

If you have suggestions or an event you would like the
group to host, please reach out to Chris Czarnowski, Young Professionals Liaison yp@asis-capital.org

Be on the lookout for more information on our next
networking event which we will held in Arlington this summer.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT - BEN CASEY

casey

Ben Casey, CPP, PSP
, has been a member of ASIS International since 2006, and joined our National Capital Chapter in 2016, volunteering to be the Membership Committee Chair.

In his position as Director of the Arlington National Capital Office of JENSEN HUGHES, as well as Director of their Mid-Atlantic Security Group, Ben operates, manages and provides business development efforts for his team as well as the overall growing security practice throughout the entire firm.

Ben said he designs physical, technical, and operational security systems, and also designs and consults on fire alarm and fire suppression systems. A security challenge he faces is prioritizing and deciding on the best opportunities to pursue. Ben said “Being able to listen to client or prospect needs or desires and then turn a new request into an excellent quality design package…is what keeps every day fresh and interesting and provides fulfillment in all we do to protect persons and property in the built environment.”

In addition to being a licensed Professional Engineer, Ben has earned the ASIS International CPP and PSP certifications, which he said are necessary for his career. These certifications are required in requests for proposals by prospective clients and are mandated by different governmental and private organizations. Ben also credits the security certification training as necessary background development for security consulting and design services.

“Truly powerful people are not concerned about their power, but about being in a position of being able to empower."
