Valentine's Day Teaches Focus
Nancy Wu, Head of Client Service
Did you know that Valentine's Day is the most popular day for couples to break up? When heart-shaped balloons are dangling from storefronts, and when every advertisement is reminding you to do something nice for that special someone, that is when our relationship is called into focus -- sometimes lovingly, and other times, I guess a Facebook status change is in order.
It's like with everything else, change happens only when we choose to, or are forced to, focus on the issue. Otherwise, without that concentrated effort, it is simply more comfortable to continue to do what we've always done. So, if you're looking to champion something new, whether it's implementing a process, adopt a policy, or launch an initiative, make your intentions public (so you're accountable to others) and prioritize prime time out of the day to devote to it. Working on things "on the side" or as secondary priority dilutes focus and makes you ill-equipped to disrupt the immense inertia needed to change the status quo.
(By the way, the second most popular break-up day is Spring Break. And in case you're wondering, the least popular break-up day is Christmas -- who would be so cruel?)
