AFP-HR Vision Statement

To be recognized as the premier fundraising resource for professionals to learn, collaborate and grow together for a vibrant Hampton Roads community.

President's Letter
N Pellegrino 2018_MG_0758

Hello and thank you! Last month I had the opportunity to represent our AFP-HR Chapter at the 2019 AFP International Fundraising Conference in San Antonio. What a wonderful experience it was to connect with other AFP chapters, interact with AFP International staff and learn from top fundraising professionals.

During the opening session, Mike Geiger, president and CEO of AFP, announced three major new programs and member benefits:
• AFP 360°, powered by Korn Ferry, a complete leadership development and career training program
• Negotiation workshops offered in partnership with the American Association of University Women
• Ethics Month in October.
These announcements, especially the first two, are a testament to the value of our AFP membership, and I am pleased to see our international staff forming innovative partnerships that will impact our profession. Read the entire article HERE!

Thank you to the 40 AFP-HR Chapter members who have made donations to our Annual Campaign – Be the Cause! We are just $350 shy of our goal of $3,550 from our chapter! If you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to click the link and do so today (gifts of all amounts help us $10, $20 and more)! Be the Cause - Donate Today!

Thank you for being a member of AFP-HR and for what you do to change the world through philanthropy!

Warm Regards,

N pellegrino Signature

2018 Tax Logo

Government Relations Committee Update

Universal Charitable Deduction Update
Two bills have been introduced that would create a universal charitable deduction, which would allow donors to deduction charitable donations from their taxable income, regardless of whether or not they itemized their taxes.

Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) has re-introduced the Charitable Giving Tax Deduction Act, H.R. 651, which he originally introduced in the last Congress. The amount of charitable contributions would not be capped under this legislation. The lead Democratic co-sponsor is Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), who sits on the House Ways and Means Committee. For a list of current co-sponsors, click here. The full text of H.R. 651 is here.

Rep. Danny Davis (D-IL), also a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, has introduced similar legislation, H.R. 1260. The full text of H.R. 1260 can be found here, with a list of co-sponsors here.

The universal charitable deduction is AFP’s key legislative priority, and both bills have been referred to the House Ways and Means Committee. Rep. Cuellar’s and Rep. Davis’ leadership on this issue is especially critical, as through their positions on the committee, they can manage the legislation through the process and ensure that the universal charitable deduction is included in any comprehensive tax bills that are developed.

Member Action: Please consider encouraging your local U.S. Representative(s) to sponsor either bill that would create the universal charitable deduction.
