The school's research day was well attended by staff and students who were presented with a range of high level research presentations. We were extremely privileged to have Professor Paula Moynihan deliver the keynote presentation on her extensive work on nutrition and oral health. Professor Moynihan is the current President of the International Association for Dental Research which is the peak international body promoting dental and oral health research, it is rare to have such a distinguished speaker in our area and Professor Moynihan set a high standard for the day.
Obtaining research funding in the general field of dentistry is not only difficult in Australia but internationally as well. It is yet to be seen if the new NHMRC funding structure will benefit dentistry, though in the latest round no dental related projects were funded. The Australasian Council of Dental Schools is acutely aware of this and will be exploring the drivers behind this to better promote research funding in Australia.
One driver to consider is the drive from research bodies for interdisciplinary research projects. Although on the face of this this could present a challenge for dentistry as colleagues in other disciplines may have limited interest in the questions we have to address as a profession. However there are considerable areas of overlap between disciplines, especially in areas traditionally led by dentistry such as regenerative dentistry / medicine, quality of life determinants, and biomaterials to name only a few. Forging interdisciplinary research is our current research challenge.

Classic Literature
Professor Love's publication is the 16th most cited article in the history of the journal.
Professor Robert M. Love's publication Love RM. Enterococcus faecalis-a mechanism for its role in endodontic failure. International Endodontic Journal 34: 399-405 (2001) is a confirmed classic. A recent publication in the International Endodontic Journal: Ahmed et.al. The top 50 most-cited articles published in the International Endodontic Journal revealed that Professor Love's article is the 16th most cited article in the history of the journal.
The International Endodontic Journal is one of two leading publications in the field of endodontics, it was established in 1967 and to date has published over 9800 articles.

NEWELL JOHNSON RECEIVED 2019 GLOBAL ORAL HEALTH RESEARCH AWARD
Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Newell Johnson, Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia, as the 2019 recipient of Global
Oral Health Research Award. Johnson was recognized at the Opening Ceremonies of the 97th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR). The IADR/AADR/CADR General Session & Exhibition was held at the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building in Vancouver, BC, Canada from June 19-22, 2019.

The Lancet Series on Oral Health
Sugar, alcohol, and tobacco fuel oral health crisis
|
A new Lancet Series led by University College London (UCL) brought together 13 academics experts from 10 countries to better understand why oral diseases have persisted globally over the past three decades, despite scientific advancements in the field, and why prevalence has increased among socially disadvantaged and vulnerable people. Oral health has been isolated from traditional healthcare and health policy for too long, despite the major global public health burden of oral diseases, according to a Lancet Series on Oral Health, published in The Lancet. Professor Marco Peres, from Menzies Health Institute Queensland and Griffith University’s School of Dentistry and Oral Health, is the only Australian academic in the international team of authors of The Lancet Series.
“In Australia, dental caries affects 34 per cent of five- and six-year-old children and 46.2 per cent of nine- and 10-year-olds,” Professor Peres said.
“In older children with permanent dentition the prevalence is 9.2 per cent among six- to eight-year-olds and nearly 40 per cent in 12- to 14-year-olds.”
Failure of the global health community to prioritise the global burden of oral health has led to calls from The Lancet Series authors for the radical reform of dental care, tightened regulation of the sugar industry, and greater transparency around conflict of interests in dental research.
Oral diseases, including tooth decay, gum disease and oral cancers, affect almost half of the global population, with untreated dental decay the most common health condition worldwide. Lip and oral cavity cancers are among the top 15 most common cancers in the world. In addition to lower quality of life, oral diseases have a major economic impact on both individuals and the wider health care system. In Australia, recurrent expenditure on dental services cost $9.904 billion in 2015-16. “Australasia has the second-highest per capita expenditure on dental care and productivity losses due to dental problems in the world,’’ Professor Peres.

The School of Dentistry and Oral Health Research Day was held on 22nd August.We were honoured, to have Professor Paula Moynihan, President IADR,join us as keynote speaker. Professor Paula Moynihan is an internationally recognized nutritionist and presented compelling evidence on the health risks associated with high sugar intake and has been instrumental highlighting the interrelationship between nutrition and oral health and the impact of compromised oral health on nutritional wellbeing.

2019 Griffith Health HDR End of Year Event
To celebrate 2019 achievements in Higher Degree Research, Griffith Health are hosting a half day event where candidates have the opportunity to present their research by 10 minute presentations, a poster or both.
Candidates will also have the opportunity to submit a publication, the winners will be announced at the conclusion of the event. Each category has cash prizes for 1st , 2nd and 3rd place.
