The changing narrative
There are similarities in the pattern behind the anti-immigration momentum in Switzerland and UK. In both cases governments are facing growing concerns from voters that are being ably seized upon by populists. The phenomenon itself is enhanced by growth and an increasingly attractive jobs market, underpinned by the free market rules of the EU. The UK Government is working on mechanisms that will combine stricter rules while securing the inflow of skilled labour. Following the 9 February constitutional vote on the reintroduction of quotas, the Swiss Government is now expected to come forward with a robust implementation scheme. Hence both executive bodies are having to square the circle of strong domestic cross-pressures and the EU's founding principle of freedom of movement. The narrative is changing in the face of chilly domestic winds that are constraining and undermining both countries positions vis-à-vis Brussels.

London City Airport chooses BSCC Geneva Chapter
London City Airport is
the UK's leading business airport and has chosen the Geneva Chapter as
part of its marketing efforts in Switzerland. Recently, it became one of
that special group of Chapter Sponsors which support the BSCC in
Romandie. Serving over 40 destinations across the UK, Europe and USA,
it is the only airport actually in London, being just three miles from
Canary Wharf and six from the City. Located on the doorstep of London’s
financial district, it is considered vital to business and receives
considerable support from the business community, especially in the
Geneva Region, which recognises the convenient location.
EVENTS
Flavour of Scotland Dinner in Berne
The
BSCC Berne’s culinary and musical tour of the British Isles returns to
Scotland this year. Here are three good reasons to attend this special
event: 1. Politics: This is the year of the Scottish
Independence Referendum: on Thursday 18 September 2014, eligible voters
will decide whether Scotland should end its 307-year-old union with
England and leave the United Kingdom. 2. Sports: In
2014, Scotland plays host to two prestigious international sporting
events - the Ryder Cup golf tournament and the Commonwealth Games. 3. History:
2014 is the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn (1314), at
which Robert the Bruce, King of the Scots, and his troops defeated the
English army in the wars of independence.
