 Following Up on the Promise of Newborn Screening
In this month’s leadership message, Patricia Finnerty, MS, operational lead for NICHQ’s newborn hearing and sickle cell projects, reflects on the 50th anniversary of the newborn screening program. "It’s time for us to completely fulfill the promise of the program begun 50 years ago by ensuring all children receive appropriate follow-up care and services," she says.

As the faculty chair of NICHQ’s Working to Improve Sickle Cell Healthcare (WISCH) project, Dr. Kwaku Ohebe-Frempong discusses the importance of sickle cell screening and disparities between the US and abroad. "If we can take what we learn from the [WISCH teams] to teach other states, programs, and treatment centers, we can help the country move forward to implement the best practices in patient care and newborn screening," he says.

NICHQ is excited to announce that we are collaborating with the healthcare consulting firm The Lewin Group to improve the care of people with sickle cell disease. The project will explore whether electronic technology, like a smart phone app or a website, can help patients with sickle cell disease manage their care.
