Dear
Members and Friends
One of the frustrations
government has is it negotiates
many Free Trade Agreements
(FTAs) which are often not fully
utilised by the businesses for
which they were negotiated for.
Businesses, on the other
hand, do not always provide
government with clear statements
as to what they need from FTAs.
Sometimes there is a clear way
to provide a list of needs and
sometimes not. A key frustration
for businesses is that FTAs are
written in legal language which
is not always accessible to the
lay businessman and
businesswoman. They need to be
able to decode the FTAs before
they can begin to understand and
use them.
In an effort to
help, the Chamber is delighted
to publish plain English guides
to the European Union-Singapore
Free Trade Agreement (EUSFTA)
which is already in force and to
the European Union-Vietnam Free
Trade Agreement (EVFTA) which
will come into force from 1
August 2020.
These two
guides have been specially
prepared and written for us by
our friends at the Asian Trade
Centre led by Dr. Deborah Elms.
We are making them available to
everyone free of charge.
I hope you find the guides
useful and, as always, would
welcome your constructive
comments and suggestions for
improvements for future guides.
