BSCC NEWS

Election time!
On 8th May 2015, the Conservatives secured 331 seats in the Commons giving them a slender majority. UK’s Prime Minister, David Cameron has returned to Downing Street and announced the members of his new government. Although the results of the elections were an impressive electoral outcome, the situation about the future of the Union and a potential “Brexit” remain uncertain. The British election might be over but the British-Swiss Chamber of Commerce elections to the council are yet to come. We would like to invite our dear members to our 95th AGM on 17th June to vote and celebrate with us our 95th Anniversary. You can find out more information about BSCC prospective Councillors on here.
Magalie Chelius, BSCC Managing Director

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

In the UK General Elections 2015 on 7 May 2015, the Scottish National party has won 56 out of Scotland's 59 seats which raises questions for the UK's political and constitutional status quo.

Do you think the UK General Election Results will put the Union at risk?

Question of the Month April - Results

QoM April 15 Outcome

The April Question of the Month asked BSCC members whether the result of the UK General Election will bring some clarity regarding Britain's future in the EU. A vast majority of respondents were uncertain how the outcome of the UK General Election would influence Britain's future in the EU. Only 20% thought that it will strengthen the case for drastically renegotiating Britain’s EU membership terms. One respondent commented that the result of the election was too difficult to predict and that some form of coalition would be highly likely. Another respondent does not think that anything will happen other than a few cosmetic changes if the Tories are returned as a majority government.

Geneva’s June cup runneth over!
Four events plus Café Soirée at Papon on ‘first Tuesday’; something new and youthful for the under 40, "Young Professionals"; Peter Kellner, President of one of the UK’s leading political polling companies, YouGov - and recently the object of much criticism for its (erroneous) predictions of the UK Election result; Summer Cocktails on the most sought-after terrace in Geneva, the Palais des Nations at the U.N.; and a Briton, Richard Jones, the European Union’s Ambassador to the Swiss Confederation: All this in just 30 days. It’s all on the BSCC website.
Quite a programme!

Successful Launch of the Young Professionals Group
With record breaking sales for the launch of the Zurich Chapter’s Young Professionals Group, the BSCC reached out to the future generation of business leaders. We were delighted to welcome Michael Näf, Founder of Doodle and an innovative entrepreneur as our first inspirational guest speaker. After the speech, a lively Q&A ensued with many questions for Michael - it was wonderful to see so many new members engaged. To see the photos of the event, please click here. The Geneva Chapter will launch its first Young Professionals Event on 2nd June. Please register early to avoid disappointment.

BRITISH-SWISS FACTS

DID YOU KNOW that Switzerland and the UK were founding members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA)?
The EFTA was set up in 1960 to promote closer economic cooperation and free trade in Europe. As of 1966 the members enjoyed full free trade in industrial products, but other than the EU, EFTA is not a customs union. In 1972 the UK and Denmark were the first to leave the EFTA in order to join the European Economic Community (today’s EU). Switzerland has remained as a member to this day, and some EU skeptics hope to see the UK rejoining soon.
