As the year draws to a close I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support throughout 2016. It has been a great pleasure to host a wonderful array of events throughout the year. 

Our 'Be Remarkable' campaign really does encapsulate our wonderful students, academics and researchers and I look forward to sharing with you their successes over the next year.

Plant walk grows

Our annual Rare and threatened plant walks are going from strength to strength. Over two beautiful spring days, Professor Catherine Pickering showcased the rare plant life growing in Griffith's backyard. Thanks to Professor Pickering's passion and knowledge the annual walk continues to be a calendar highlight for plant lovers or anyone wanting to know more about Australia's native flora.

Our Extracting strategic advantage from public data sources event on the Gold Coast back in March was such a success that we teamed up with the Open Data Institute for a Brisbane edition. Together our panel members brought a wealth of knowledge and experience. Guests enjoyed a night of insightful discussion and the opportunity to network with industry colleagues.

Medical student beats all odds 

Most doctors study medicine to help others but for this young soon-to-be doctor it's much more personal. In 2010, Griffith medicine student Dinesh aquaplaned on Brisbane's Gateway bridge; an accident that left him quadriplegic. Through his hard work and determination Dinesh is now at the forefront of spinal injury treatment research and has successfully graduated from Griffith's School of Medicine.

What do you get when you combine a love for physics with excellent swimming talent? Cameron McEvoy and the face of Griffith University's Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games partnership. The Griffith science student and Olympic swimmer has joined the team to help promote Griffith University's exciting partnership with the 2018 event.

Griffith's own wins Queensland Australian of the Year 2017

Congratulations to Professor Alan Mackay-Sim for this fantastic achievement and for his continued success in stem cell research. The Griffith University Professor was awarded the 2017 Queensland Australian of the Year for his world-leading spinal cord research, which is giving thousands of Australians hope.

National art award winner connects land and sea

Griffith University lecturer, Dr Julie Fragar has won the highly acclaimed Tidal: City of Devonport National Art Award. Her oil painting, 'Antonio Depart Flores on the Whaling Tide', was selected from over 130 entries across Australia. The painting (pictured above) is complex and features a range of overlaid images, which captured the imagination of the judges who described the piece as "wild adventure".
