NIST Releases Cybersecurity Framework

To help organizations charged with providing the nation's financial, energy, health care and other critical systems better protect their information and physical assets from cyber attack, the Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently released a Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity. The framework provides a structure that organizations, regulators and customers can use to create, guide, assess or improve comprehensive cybersecurity programs.

The framework allows organizations—regardless of size, degree of cyber risk or cybersecurity sophistication—to apply the principles and best practices of risk management to improve the security and resilience of critical infrastructure.

Member-Get-A-Member

The 2014 Campaign is now underway!

Every time you recruit a new member, you help strengthen ASIS. A vital and growing membership means greater recognition of the security profession, improved educational and networking opportunities for members, and the advancement of our profession worldwide. And, referring members has added benefits for you and your chapter!

Recruiting is Easy!

Recruiting a member is easy—when you connect with fellow security professionals tell your colleague(s) how you benefit from your membership and suggest that they visit
www.asisonline.org  to learn more about the value of membership.

If they join and put your name and employer (company) or phone number on the membership application line titled, "Person who introduced you to ASIS" you get the credit. And ASIS keeps track of your recruitment activity for you. It's that simple.

Chairperson Corner

Greetings NCC Members -

What a great month it has been, despite the cold weather!

We began February by learning that the ASIS National Capital Chapter was the recipient of the I.B. Hale Chapter of the Year Award for, an unprecedented, third year in a row.  Overall, this is the Chapter's fourth I.B. Hale award.

The I.B. Hale award was established in 1972 to honor former ASIS President and Chairman of the Board I.B. Hale and recognizes the most outstanding chapters in each award group.  Chapters are evaluated on a range of criteria including: membership growth, quality of chapter programs, support of ASIS certifications and the foundation, chapter financial status, promotion of the profession in the local community, and prompt submission of chapter reports to headquarters.

In addition to the I.B. Hale, our newsletter received an Honorable Mention award.  The Chapter was also recognized for the highest net increase of members.

I want to congratulate and thank all of our past executive board members, committee chairs, volunteers and members who all serve an important role in making the NCC such an outstanding chapter.  Just sustaining a Chapter requires dedication and enthusiasm.  For a Chapter of this size and diversity to continue flourishing and growing, is the result of so many of our members volunteering, attending meetings and continuing to spread the word about ASIS membership.

We always have a need for additional volunteers!  We continue to search for a Budget Director, a Volunteer Coordinator and a Communications Chair.  And, something new this year, we are looking for a Social Media Coordinator.  If you are interested in one of these volunteer positions or just want to get involved but are not sure where to start, contact us at comm-chair@asis-capital.org

Best regards,

Loye A. Manning, CPP, PSP
ASIS National Capital Chapter Chair

Recap:  February Events

There was a lot of buzz around our February guest speaker and he did not disappoint.  We had a full house to hear Eric O'Neill, former FBI Agent share his experiences.

Eric O'NeillIn 2001, Eric O'Neill helped capture the most notorious spy in United States history: Robert Hanssen, a 25-year veteran of the FBI.  The remarkable true events of his life were the inspiration behind the critically acclaimed dramatic thriller Breach, starring Ryan Philippe as O'Neill. The film set inside the FBI - the gatekeeper of the nation's most sensitive and potentially volatile secrets - is the story of the greatest security breach in US history.

Feb 2014 NCC MeetingPreceding Hanssen's arrest, O'Neill worked with the spy within the information assurance division that protected all classified FBI intelligence. O'Neill gained Hanssen's trust and used that relationship to slowly draw the traitor out of deep cover. Engaged in a lethal game of spy versus spy, O'Neill found himself fighting to bring down Hanssen before the treacherous double agent could destroy him, his family, and the nation they were both sworn to serve.

Mr. O'Neill also pointed out the parallels to more recent events involving Edward Snowden and discussed the challenges we all face with securing information in today's digital age.

Currently, O’Neill runs The Georgetown Group, a premier investigative and security consultancy, where he specializes in counterintelligence and counterterrorism operations, investigations into economic espionage, cyber security penetrations, internal investigations and security risk assessment consulting out of Washington, DC.  In addition to his experience in the Hanssen case, he also addresses the issues of confidence and patriotism, the threat to United States security posed by terrorism, foreign intelligence services, the cyber threat to our national infrastructure and the national conscience in a monitored society.

Young Professionals

The ASIS National Capital Chapter Young Professionals held their second Happy Hour Networking Event and Business Card Exchange in the month of February at the famous Old Ebbitt Grill.  Over 30 Young Professional attended this event building their networks.  Everyone from students in college to experience professionals looking to build their network and switch career were present.  The group is a great way to meet people in the ASIS National Capital Chapter and many of the events are of little or no cost.  Consider checking out the next one.  See you there!

Member Spotlight:  Shelly Kozacek

Shelly KozacekShelly Kozacek
Facility Security Officer
Crowell & Moring LLP

We would like to introduce you to Shelly Kozacek.  Shelly has been a member of ASIS and the National Capital Chapter for two years and currently volunteers as the ASIS NCC Women in Security (WIS) Chapter Liaison.

Shelly started her security career with the Defense Security Service in 2000, as an Investigator conducting background investigations for security clearances.  In 2003 she moved into industrial security with DSS as an Industrial Security Representative assisting facilities in the National Industrial Security Program.  In 2008, Shelly became an Action Officer for the Capital Region expanding her knowledge in the Foreign Ownership Control and Influence arena. In 2009, she became the Field Office Chief for the Arlington Field Office handling over 500 facilities in her office.  In 2010, she became the Regional Operations Manager for the Capital Region and ultimately decided to leave the government in 2011 for private industry.  Shelly has now been the FSO at Crowell & Moring in D.C. for over two years and is responsible for ensuring that the firm adheres to the regulations of the National Industrial Security Program.  She oversees the security program at the firm and ensures that they are in compliance.

Like so many of us, Shelly happened into security management by accident.  After college she was looking for a job and came across the investigator position with DSS.  From there she was able to cultivate and grow her security career.  She says that she enjoys the change of security and the continual need for growth and development.  Shelly’s view is that the security field is not a field where you can stand still; it is important to grow in the field and challenge yourself.

Shelly tells us that ASIS membership has helped her career through networking and knowledge exchange.  ASIS has been a wonderful way to gather information to increase her knowledge in the security arena, because as we all know, the security world is always changing.  She says it has also been excellent to have such a wonderful networking group of individuals within the program.  If she has a question, she may not know the answer, yet she knows she can reach out to fellow security professionals that she has met through ASIS along the way.

Shelly highly recommends the WIS events to all of our members.  These events are an excellent opportunity for women in all levels of their careers and those that support them to share and exchange information on how to get to the next level.  Watch out for the next WIS event in the March/April timeframe.  Shelly is always up for hearing more of what you would like for the WIS events.  Please feel free to reach out and contact her with your ideas, thoughts, and comments.  “I really enjoy all of the events and find them extremely helpful for career growth and knowledge growth.”

A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.
