Hello Wyoming friends!  I hope you have had a restful and relaxing summer.  We are extremely excited about this new school year in education in Wyoming and with AdvancED!  I would love to catch up with all of you at the Fall School Improvement Conference in Cheyenne, September 23-24.  Our friends and colleagues at the Wyoming Department of Education are once again our Wyoming education partners.

Additionally, I am excited for the school systems that will be visited and evaluated this fall.  What a great benefit to have outside experts assessing systems effectiveness.

I want to briefly mention that AdvancED continues to lead the nation and the world in education excellence.  Things are constantly “moving and shaking” with AdvancED.  There will be national-level and state-level AdvancED personnel at the fall conference to answer any and all questions that you may have.

In closing, let me take this opportunity to thank you, my Wyoming friends, for the steadfast support and confidence that you maintain in me and AdvancED Wyoming.  We do what we do for you

Annette
Director, AdvancED Wyoming

Wyoming's Lead Evaluators

Wyoming leads the nation in the number of Lead Evaluators it has to help lead quality External Review Teams throughout the nation and the world.  Lead Evaluators go through intensive training on the AdvancED Standards, Protocol and team dynamics management.  The expertise that Wyoming provides to AdvancED with its Lead Evaluators is invaluable.

All AdvancED Lead Evaluators met in Alpharetta, Georgia on July 28-31 to be updated on this year’s team reviews and the processes involved in leading quality External Reviews.  The Wyoming Lead Evaluators bring with them decades of knowledge and experience with school and school system effectiveness.  AdvancED Wyoming is very proud of the high-powered educators who consistently step up from Wyoming to serve.

If you would like to serve as an External Review Team Member, contact Brad Jacobson, AdvancED Vice President of Accreditation.  Serving as a Lead Evaluator or as a team member of an External Review Team is one of the best professional development experiences you can have.  Treat yourself to this opportunity and join us for this great experience!

Fall School Improvement Conference

It is here!  Time to register for the AdvancED Wyoming Fall School Improvement Conference!  We are meeting September 23-24, 2013 in Cheyenne at the beautiful Little America Hotel and Resort.

The Wyoming Department of Education’s new Director, Rich Crandall, will be with us and provide some remarks during the Monday morning kick-off.  We are excited to hear from Director Crandall and happy to be partnering with the Wyoming Department of Education once again.

Director Crandall’s address will be followed by a provocative keynote presentation from Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs, President of Curriculum Designers, Inc.  GEAR UP Wyoming is sponsoring Dr. Jacobs’ presentation and providing all attendees with Dr. Jacobs’ latest book from ASCD entitled Curriculum 21: Essential Education for a Changing World.  Stop by GEAR UP Wyoming’s Information Table and give them a thanks for all they do for Wyoming students and educators.

In addition to Dr. Jacobs remarks Monday morning, we have nearly a hundred unique break-out sessions, including special sessions for the Common Core, STEM, Instructional Technology, a variety of WDE sessions to keep everyone up-to-date on Rules, Regs, and all things “WDE,” AdvancED updates and protocol sessions—a must for this year’s and next year’s visited districts and schools, plus three additional plenary sessions.

We are once again looking forward to a very successful School Improvement Conference that meets a variety of needs. The conference is jammed packed with expertise and information!  The AdvancED School Improvement Conferences is once again the “one-stop shop” for all things education in the state!  Mark those calendars now.  Register here.  See you in Cheyenne!

Plenary Sessions Highlight of Conference
Dr. James Stone discusses “Teaching Academics Through CTE: An Authentic Way to Learn” Monday afternoon. Tuesday morning features Dr. Hans Meeder and his “Connecting Pathways, CTE, and STEM to the Common Core State Standards.” These keynotes are very relevant to the work we do with students every day and have been brought to the conference by the Wyoming Department of Education's Career Technical Education Section.

Tuesday mid-day offers insight along with time for “Q & A” from the Professional Judgment Panel with Results on Statewide Accountability. Panelists include:  Mike Flicek, Paige Fenton-Hughes, Julie Magee, and Deb Lindsey.  This information is very important for Wyoming educators to understand the direction Wyoming is taking with the new accountability requirements.

Partnerships Enrich Conferences

AdvancED Wyoming has forged several meaningful partnerships over the years that have resulted in higher quality professional development via the School Improvement Conferences.  We would like to highlight these partners so that they get the credit that they deserve in contributing to quality education in Wyoming.

GEAR UP Wyoming contributes in many ways to the School Improvement Conferences.  They frequently sponsor keynote speakers, provide the most recent educational books for conference participants and sponsor the Quantum Learning workshops that are conducted simultaneously with the conference.  GEAR UP Wyoming not only helps educators, but also has an exciting student program.  To learn more about GEAR UP Wyoming, check out their website.

TIE (Technology and Innovation in Education) is another partnership that has been very beneficial to AdvancED Wyoming.  TIE provides experts in the fields of Common Core State Standards and integrating Web 2.0 tools into the classroom.  These experts present a myriad of outstanding break-out sessions that are some of the most highly rated sessions.  TIE comes to us from Rapid City, South Dakota. Visit their website to learn more about them and the services they offer.

Last but not least, the Wyoming Department of Education has returned to the AdvancED Wyoming School Improvement Conference.  Look for their sessions for the latest WDE news.

Hosting an External Review This Year

School systems in the southeast corner of Wyoming will notice an influx of educators from all over the nation descending upon them this fall.  Not to worry, these people are from AdvancED and are in town to evaluate the school systems’ effectiveness as related to the AdvancED Standards for Quality School Systems. These reviews are extremely important to the systems, schools and communities.  AdvancED conducts these reviews to ensure that schools and systems accredited through AdvancED are living up to the highest of research-based Standards. The systems hosting an External Review this fall are:  Albany #1, Carbon #1, Carbon #2, Platte #1, Platte #2, Goshen #1, and Laramie #2.  It is strongly recommended that system and building administrators and faculty members from these systems be in attendance at the Fall 2013 School Improvement Conference.  Information provided at the conference will set systems up to receive a truly “value-added” External Review.  If you have any questions, please contact our state office.

AdvancED, the home of NCA CASI, NWAC and SACS CASI, is dedicated to
