Chapter Chair Corner

The ASIS National Capital Chapter hosted two great events this month.

On the evening of April 16th, we celebrated our annual Scholarship Night.  Each year, our Chapter recognizes the academic achievements of students in security management, administration of justice and programs allied to security at the associate, baccalaureate and graduate levels with cash scholarships. This has been a tradition of the National Capital Chapter since 1983. It is an important opportunity for us, as members of a professional society, to make a contribution to the community beyond our own membership. We had a great group of nominees this year, all of which had very impressive accomplishments.  Making the award selections was not an easy job this year and all of our recipients were deserving of the presented scholarships.  Interestingly enough, all of the nominees this year were women, a first for our scholarship program.

Young Professionals PanelFollowing the scholarship presentations, attendees had the opportunity to hear from a panel of Young Professionals who will engaged in a discussion about how they entered the security field, opportunities available and some of the challenges facing Young Professionals as they begin their security careers.  The panel was moderated by Jeremiah Main and included Nichole Corum and Christian Conroy.

He also tied his comments to his role in the insurance industry and provided information on steps companies can take to mitigate losses if an event occurs.

Member Spotlight -
Brian Glynn, CPP

Brian GlynnBrian Glynn is a Supervisory Special Agent, with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).  He began his career with the ATF in 1987, in the Boston Division. ATF is part of the Department of Justice, but at that time was under the Department of the Treasury.  His first 10 years was as a field agent, conducting firearm, drug, arson and explosive investigations. He worked a great deal of undercover at the time, focusing primarily on violent crime investigations involving criminal organizations, gangs, and drug and gun traffickers. He is a certified explosives specialist and also taught post blast investigations and explosives handling to state and local police and fire investigators.

One of his notable investigations as an agent involved white supremacist groups that were acquiring stockpiling firearms and explosives in preparation for a race war.  It was a two year long investigation during which time he infiltrated an informant and undercover agent into the groups.  The investigation led to the arrest and prosecution of members and leaders, also resulting in the seizure of large number of firearms, silencers, timed pipe bombs and bomb making materials. The prosecution was high profile and received a great amount of media coverage.  The case is now an exhibit at the ATF Headquarters museum, Washington, DC.

In 1997, he was assigned to the Headquarters in Office of Science and Technology, and then the Firearms, Explosives and Arson Directorate (FEA). In FEA, he managed a nation-wide program to automate ATF crime gun tracing capabilities with U.S. and foreign police agencies, and firearm manufactures.

In 2000, he was appointed Resident Agent in Charge in Delaware, where he supervised the ATF’s law enforcement and public safety mission. He led the Delaware Firearms Trafficking Task Force and Project Safe Neighborhood Violent Crime Task Force. In addition, he supervised ATF investigations involving arson, explosives, and contraband cigarette trafficking.

In 2006, he returned to Headquarters where he served 6 years as a supervisory special agent in the Office of Professional Responsibility and Security Operations (OPRSO).  He conducted employee misconduct, internal security, and workplace investigations and inspections relating Bureau operations.  He remained in this assignment until 2012, when he was assigned as a Representative to the U. S. State Department.

Currently, he has worked in the Office of Strategic Intelligence and Information (OSII) since 2012, as the Counterterrorism and Criminal Intelligence Program Manager. He is ATF’s Representative to the U.S. Department of State for counterterrorism, intelligence and law enforcement.  In this position, he facilitates ATF resources in support of diplomatic security, law enforcement investigations, and counterterrorism and import/export control matters.  He also serves as liaison to the Federal Export Control Center (E2C2).

Of a number of security challenges that Brian faces in his workplace, he highlights the obstacles encountered mostly related to information sharing with partner law enforcement and intelligence and Government security organizations.  His work deals mostly with classified and law enforcement sensitive information. “While collaboration and information sharing between law enforcement, the intelligence community, and private entities have grown tremendously post 9/11, there still remains challenges in sharing appropriate and actionable information in a manner that protects methods of collection, sources, and ongoing investigations/operations”, remarked Mr. Glynn.

Member Spotlight (Continued)
We asked Mr. Glynn how he came to the decision of choosing a career in security management. He advised that in his junior year of college, he read an advertisement for special agent careers with the U.S. Secret Service. Not long after, he visited the local Federal Building in Providence, RI to inquire. However, the Secret Service had moved so he rang the buzzer on the door of an unmarked office that happened to be a local office of the ATF.

Mr. Glynn admits that ATF has provided an incredibly interesting, exciting and diverse career for him; providing the opportunity to travel worldwide on assignments and training, while working on some of the most high profile Federal investigations and responses in the last twenty years.

Mr. Glynn affirms that he would highly recommend law enforcement, security, and security management as career options as the professions provide opportunities for personal growth, professional development and upward mobility.  To develop his own portfolio, he became a member of ASIS and also the National Capital Chapter in 2012.  He also obtained the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation in June 2012.

With regards to how his ASIS membership has benefited his career, he believes that as he prepares for his transition from Government, into a private sector security management role, ASIS has provided invaluable education and networking opportunity with experienced security professionals.  He has also found the chapter members to be generous with their expertise, experiences, and leads on potential job opportunities.

As the ASIS NCC organizes and hosts outstanding presentations and training opportunities, individual participation at the chapter level is something that Brian recommends highly, particularly for young or new professionals and those transitioning from careers such as military or Government service.

We thank Mr. Brian Glynn for this contributions to the security industry.
