President's Letter

Head Shot - 2017 Kenda Council 2
Greetings AFP-Hampton Roads Chapter Members,

I hope you enjoyed our October chapter presentation focused on hosting virtual events. We appreciate you joining in on the zoom call and are grateful for the continued support of our monthly luncheon sponsor, Virginia Fundraising Consultants. Thank you to Shira Turner and Kate Powell, co-chairs of the Programs Committee, along with their committee members who helped organize this informative session.

Over the course of the last month, we’ve been receiving member votes to approve our 2021 Slate of Directors. The votes closed on October 20th at 1pm. I am pleased to inform you that the 2021 Slate was approved. We are grateful to Nicole Pellegrino, Past President and Nominating Chair, who has worked tirelessly with her committee to build our 2021 Slate of Directors. Thank you to 2020 Board members for your service through a challenging year. Congratulations to Kate Wilson, who will serve as the 2021 AFP-HR Chapter President, and the members of the 2021 AFP-HR Board!

It’s November - and time to celebrate philanthropy! While we are not hosting our traditional National Philanthropy Day luncheon celebration, we are truly excited to celebrate the spirit of philanthropy in Hampton Road through our Community Champion recognition program. Please make a note to read the November 23rd Inside Business edition to view our list of AFP-HR Community Champions and Friends of AFP! Thank you to all of our sponsors!

We have an exciting free “pop up” event in November scheduled for November 19th at 8:30 a.m. via zoom. Patrick Belcher will lead a discussion about "Setting up your Fundraising Staff for Success!" I hope you will make plans to join us.

At our December 15th chapter meeting, we will host virtual festive activities, honor our Be the Cause donors, recognize our retiring board members, pass the leadership gavel and welcome a representative from AFP-Global to share information on member benefits. Save the date!

Thanks for all you continue to do for philanthropy in Hampton Roads. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

Keep up the good work,

Kenda G. Council
2020 President, AFP-HR

NOVEMBER POP UP PROGRAM- Thursday, November 19, 2020 at 8:30 am
breakfast meeting

Topic: Setting Up Your Fundraising Staff for Success
Speaker: Patrick Belcher, PBJ Marcomm

Description:

As development professionals, we understand the value of planning in our fundraising activities.

So why do we hire people and have no strategic plan when they get started Research shows that effective annual training increases a fundraisers results by $37,000. It does not require an HR professional or trainer to set up a plan for success for new fundraising staff.

In this pop-up you'll learn a few easy ways to invest in your fundraising staff...mostly using resources already at your fingertips! Get ready to conquer the turnover monster and better manage expectations for your staff!

December Holiday Social - Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at 12:00 Noon

Happy-Holidays

Join us for our 2020 Holiday Social as we take advantage of the fun things virtual socializing has to offer!

Games (with prizes!) will occur, as well as a prize for the most festively dressed (think virtual background, ugly sweaters, the whole monte).

We will also "pass the gavel" to our incoming President and honor our Be the Cause donors!

Don't miss this time to have some fun and unwind from a year that will probably forever live in infamy.

We will also have a representative from AFP Global who will share information about member benefits.

ETHICS
Ethics

Answers to last month’s ethics quiz:
Last month, we included some ethics questions in honor of Ethics month. Our hope was to spur conversation and introspection on fundraising ethics and test your knowledge with the following questions. As promised, this month we are providing the answers to the questions posed.

Ethical Dilemma #1: A donor contacted a university and asked if he could contribute a charitable contribution to pay the college tuition of a student he knows. What should the college’s answer be?
A: No. While any institution welcomes scholarship support, the donor cannot specify whom that support goes to. The donor, can, however, set parameters—such as low income, minority, etc.—but they cannot identify a specific individual.

Ethical Dilemma #2: Your Board Chairman wants to hire as Campaign Director a highly seasoned, successful salesperson, who was the top salesperson at GE for a decade. This candidate is clearly the best option. However, she will only work on a percentage-based compensation plan. Would you hire her?
A: Maybe, but only if the candidate agrees to compensation that does not include a commission or percentage based.

Ethical Dilemma #3: A donor says that he will consider a $250,000 gift to the campaign if their institution will hire his sister, who is actually fully qualified for the position, for a nursing role within the hospital. Do you accept the gift and hire his sister?
A: This is a tough one. You certainly cannot accept a gift with a condition attached—like making a specific hire. The institution, however, might consider interviewing the applicant on their own merit, but decline the contribution due to perceptions of impropriety.

Ethical Dilemma #4: Suppose an elderly major donor has bought you a gold ring as a thank-you gift for helping arrange a planned gift of $1 million to your organization. You know the donor and know that the donor would probably be offended if you turned down the gift. What should you do?
A: You would need to have frank discussion with the donor and explain that, as honored as you are by her offer, you will have to check with your supervisors to see if they are comfortable with you accepting the gift.
