How To Think Like A Futurist

Abstract:
Based on her work as Director of Game Research & Development for the Institute for the Future, Jane McGonigal will unlock the power of the audience's imagination with a master class in futures thinking based on the popular Stanford University course.

Thinking about the far-off future isn’t just a fun exercise in curiosity. It’s a practical skill that, new scientific research reveals, primes your brain for greater creativity, empathy, and optimism. In other words, futurist thinking gives you the ability to create change in your own life and the world around you, today.

You will learn and practice a kind of future simulation based on the neuroscience of videogaming that will improve your powers of imagination and "level up" your ability to predict and solve the problems of the future. Along the way, you will learn how to use the new Ethical Operating System (OS), a gameful tool from the Institute for the Future that can help businesses anticipate the long-term social impacts and unexpected uses of their tech, including by criminals, foreign adversaries, and other bad actors.

Title:

Why We Should be Optimistic about Cyber Security

Description:
Working in cyber security is inherently about managing challenges and responding to problems. There is no such thing as 100% security, we will never attain perfection and often the advice we have been giving for years is ignored or impossible to enact. Our jobs are centered on identifying problems, errors, attacks or failures and we are constantly confronted with people causing harm, either acting maliciously or by accident. Within this context, it’s no surprise that cynicism reigns. Leave all of that at the door when you enter this session, in which Dr Jessica Barker will explore why pessimism is holding us back and the importance of being optimistic about the future of cyber security.
