Event Description

In this talk we take the routine task of studying fund performance and risk from the position of an analyst who needs to understand what drives performance and risk for a set of mutual funds. Our analyst is handicapped by having nothing other than a table of monthly fund returns between 2009 and 2019 for a set of 10 US large cap mutual funds. We show that our analyst can accomplish a lot by using some coding knowledge with a dollop of ingenuity and some resources from the web. We suggest how the analyst can approach this task. In doing so we walk you through the key ideas in fund risk and performance analysis, show you what you need to do it yourself, and demonstrate how it can be done.
