Hedging Academy: The Hedging Academy is designed to educate and enlighten participants about hedging, trading, and merchandising. It will look at all aspects that a producer or commercial hedger should consider before making decisions. We will be covering the topics of basis, spreads, margin, speculation, options, risk, and OTC’s.  This class is designed for those people working directly in marketing and merchandising roles.  Those who work in support functions and need a better understanding of the trading side of the business should look on our website for our Commodity Basics course.  


Course Instructors:

 Joe Lardy, Research Manager, CHS Hedging - Joe Lardy analyzes a broad range of data that  could potentially affect commodity markets, provides forecasts and commentary for government-issued reports, and offers recommendations and insight to help commercial and producer customers make better hedging decisions.  Joe has over 20 years in the ag industry.  Before coming to CHS in 2014, he was with Cargill in the risk management group where he worked on developing trading strategies and marketing commodity insights to hedge fund customers.


 Christl Larson
, Risk Manager, CHS Hedging - Christl Larson is a graduate of Smith College (MA) with a degree in International Economics and Philosophy. In her 30 + year career, Christl has been in trading and risk management businesses. She has experience in financial products, agricultural products and energy products, in United States and other world markets. Presently, she manages and directs strategic modeling to monitor the risks associated with the activities of CHS Hedging and associated underlying customer positions, implementation of the Global Risk system, leading the risk management unit, and helping with various on-going projects. She has two children, 24 and 19, and her husband of almost 30 years is a pediatrician and cook extraordinaire.


 Nick Paumen, Commodity Broker, CHS Hedging - Nick is a recent addition to the CHS Hedging team in Inver Grove Heights as a Market Analyst/Commodity Broker.  He works with commercial and producer accounts on risk management in the commodity markets.  He joined CHS Hedging in September of 2019. Nick started out in the elevator business by completing a two summers of internships with Gavilon in elevator operations in Texas and Illinois.  After graduating from college, he worked as an operation superintendent for over two years between facilities in St. Cloud, MN and Havre, MT.  He then took a break from grain elevators and managed a liquid cattle feed plant in Billings, MT.  He joined CHS in the summer of 2015, doing grain procurement for a shuttle loading facility in west central Minnesota.  He obtained his commodity broker license in 2017 to work with producers at the CHS Hedging branch office. Nick is father to a son and daughter and has been married to his wife Adrianna for over 4 years.  They live in Becker, MN.  Nick is a graduate of NDSU in Fargo and holds a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Systems management and a minor in Agribusiness.


 Steve Wagner
, Commodity Broker, CHS Hedging Steve Wagner has more than 38 years in the grain industry developing market strategies for producers and working with elevators. Among his duties at CHS hedging Steve manages the Compass program for CHS hedging. Steve works with producers helping them manage risk in their farm operations. Steve also co-writes The Edge, a marketing service offered by CHS hedging. Steve still actively farms – bringing a hands-on perspective to his analysis.  He holds a Business Finance degree from the University of St. Thomas, St Paul, Minnesota.
