Preconference Workshop: Creating Data Literacy Lesson Plans

Do your patrons struggle to understand economic data? Are you looking for resources to make your instruction more effective?

In conjunction with Beyond the Numbers 2018, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis is offering a half-day workshop designed for librarians who are interested in helping the profession move forward with data literacy.

Participants will learn how to create instructional lessons using the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy Threshold Concepts focused on data topics. Lessons created using this approach are designed to engage students in active learning using the ACRL information literacy frames and actual economic data.

In this preconference workshop, you will experience a structured approach to lesson writing developed by renowned curriculum designers. First, you will take the role of a student. Next, you’ll work on structuring a hands-on activity suitable to use in your own instruction. At the end of the workshop you will have the outline for an actual lesson.

Complete lesson-writing, editing and peer-review will take place in 3-day workshops scheduled in 2019 and 2020. In these professional development events small, collaborative, teams will receive extensive support and guidance from curriculum designers and data experts. The final product for the 3-day workshops will be a set of edited, peer-reviewed lessons on data literacy, using FRED.  These lessons will be added to the St. Louis Fed’s award-winning, open access Economic Education portal, to Project Cora, and to other librarian-focused education repositories.

This Beyond the Numbers preview workshop is particularly valuable for librarians interested in future participation in the full 3-day lesson writing workshop and lesson development project.
