Course overview

The payment business has transformed itself during the last few decades, driven by changes in consumer behavior, technology and regulation. This workshop charts that journey, giving delegates a solid understanding of what drives the payment business today and more importantly, what will shape it tomorrow.

  • Reflect on how mobile has revolutionized the way we interact and pay
  • Learn how new technologies have created a more competitive market as well as challenges for identification and security
  • Acquire insight on how new technologies may shape the future of payments and retail

    Day 1 (session 1): 08/12/2020 - Evolution of payments

    • This session charts the evolution of payment methods from barter to bitcoin: what drives adoption and acceptance of new methods?

    Day 1 (session 2): 08/12/2020 - The new payment landscape

    • Building on the evolving payments landscape, this session explores the influences beyond payments changing our habits in commerce and social interaction. What does this mean for how we’ll pay in the future?

    Day 2 (session 1): 10/12/2020 - Payment networks and the emerging challengers

    • We start with a detailed look at the four-party card model and explore how different ‘rails’ are challenging the dominance of the original networks

    Day 2 (session 2): 10/12/2020 - Economics & risk

    • We dive into the economics of the payments world. Where is the money made, what role does interchange have, and will it survive regulation? How are the economics changing?

    Day 3 (session 1): 15/12/2020 - Regulation

    • We look at how regulators think and act and why they are pushing electronic payments. What are the next areas of focus now for regulation?

    Day 3 (session 2): 15/12/2020 - Open Finance

    • Across the globe, regulators are developing an ‘open-finance’ agenda. We explore what this means for payments and banking and who is best placed to exploit these changes

    Day 4 (session 1): 17/12/2020 - Mobile and digital

    • A detailed look into the mobile and digital trends in payments. Who is winning the battle for our screentime and who is setting the standard for digital experience in payments?

    Day 4 (session 2): 17/12/2020 - The future of payments

    • A thought-provoking close to the course. We discuss and look at where the future of payments is heading. Who is primed to win the race to invisible payments and who runs the risk of becoming invisible themselves!

    Each session is 2.5 hours in duration with a break. Sessions will be recorded to enable delegates playback.

     

    Learning Outcomes

    At the end of the course you will be able to:

    • Talk confidently on the different types of payment methods. You will recognize the key factors driving change in the industry. You will also be able to understand key stakeholders and their roles in the payment process. You will identify revenue and expense drivers and their role in profitability. You will appreciate risk factors and fraud trends in payments. Finally you will understand the influence of technology in shaping today’s payment landscape
