Yogyakarta
Considered one of the cradles of civilization, Yogyakarta, a gateway to central Java, is the second-most visited destination in Indonesia, after Bali. Flanked in the north by the smoldering Mount Merapi volcano and the Indian Ocean in the south, this graceful old city was the seat of power that produced the magnificent temples of the eighth and ninth centuries. Today, a bustling cultural hub, Yogyakarta is the center of Javanese arts, from the refined court dances to modern arts and performing arts, and Yogyakarta event venues like the tourism villages of Ketingan, Sambi, and Pentingsari.

Yogyakarta's Adisucipto International Airport is mainly a domestic hub connecting the region to Jakarta, Denpasar, and the rest of Indonesia. Internationally, Yogyakarta is connected to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Chief among convention venues in Yogyakarta, the 17,090-square-meter Jogja Expo Center (JEC), spread across 14 hectares, is just 15 minutes from the airport. It includes three halls, measuring 8,640 square meters, 882 square meters, and 1,260 square meters, as well as pre-function space of 1,404 square meters, a VIP room, and a meeting room measuring 144 square meters. The JEC also includes a 1,200-square-meter outdoor exhibition space, a helipad, and container space. Hotel venues in Yogyakarta include the 246-room Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta Resort & Spa, which has 11 meeting rooms for up to 2,300. The 269-room Hyatt Regency can accommodate 1,000 attendees in its 743-square-meter ballroom. The 223-room Inna Garuda has 18 meeting rooms and can host up to 800 guests. The 280-room Melia Purosani Hotel’s 413-square-meter ballroom accommodates 520.

The closing ceremony of a big conference could be held near one of the ninth-century temples with a performance of Hindu epic dance-dramas, like Ramayana, in traditional Javanese style. Following a meeting, a four-hour city tour can include sites and learning about silver handicraft-making from local artists. A five-hour tour to Borobudur, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is popular, as is a day tour by Jeep that starts in the early hours of the morning to a viewing point high on the lava flows of Gunung Merapi, one of the most active volcanoes in Java, where duck eggs can be boiled in its hot sands.
