Hello,
Thank you to all that attended our February luncheon with Connie McKenzie, CFRE, Senior Associate VP of Development & Alumni Relations, EVMS and Elise Krikau, Senior Consultant at Campbell & Company! We were given the opportunity to hear a case study in our very own backyard and network with over 65 like-minded professionals. It was time well spent. In March, we will have an outside presenter, Tom Koller, whose work as a writer, columnist and editor earned him national honors from both the Associated Press and Gannett News Service. You will not want to miss it!
As a chapter, it is our commitment to provide affordable educational opportunities to our membership. We are excited to announce that we are offering 2 additional VFRI conference scholarships in the categories of young professionals and diversity. Please see the link to the application in this newsletter to learn more.
Please take a moment to read through this month’s newsletter. There is a wealth of information and several important dates to get on your calendar!
Thank you for being a part of AFP-HR and for what YOU do for our community!
I look forward to seeing you on March 19 at our next luncheon!
Warm Regards,
|

March 19, 2019 Educational Program
They're Just Words on Paper
Tom Koller, President, IMPACT Communications
A high-energy, hands-on presentation on the tools needed to be an effective, impactful communicator. The idea is simple: Take your message – just words on paper – and
bring that message to life, creating what Tom refers to as “impactful communication” in which the audience not only remembers you, the speaker, but most importantly your message long after you have left the room.
Putting it all together - developing attention-grabbing writing with dynamic delivery - isn’t always as easy as it sounds. Ensure that you understand your objectives, your audience and their needs, and learn to use written and verbal communication tools to craft the perfect message.
Agenda:
11:30 am Registration/Networking
12:00 pm Program/Lunch
This program has been submitted for CFRE Credit

Leadership: It's More than a Position
Synetia Newby, President, Greater Workers Consulting Group LLC
Leadership is often construed as being applicable to those who hold certain positions and titles. However, leadership is a practice that any person can engage in, including fundraising professionals. In this presentation, attendees will engage in a conversation and activities that inspire and empower their leadership capacity and practice.

Join the Government Relations Committee
The Government Relations Committee will be meeting on Wednesday, March 13 at 4pm at EVMS Development. If you are interested in helping us improve communication and become more active as a chapter and individually, please join us (RSVP to amersosa@evms.edu). We have several tasks we would like to put into action this year. We are seeking members with some familiarity about legislative process, those with legislative relationships and/or those interested in public policy. This year there will be much to do as Congress examines the impact of the major tax bill signed into law in 2017 as it considers changes and other amendments.
Contact Serena Amerson, CFRE, Government Relations Chair with questions – 757-961-2015.

Each and every day, the important work you do demonstrates that you are a leader in effecting change in our community, making it a much better place for all of us. These three words—Empower, Strengthen, Transform—describe WHAT you do as a fundraiser and WHY you do it.
When you give to the BE the CAUSE Campaign, benefiting both our chapter and the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy, you are investing in the future of our profession and advancing philanthropy for the greater good.
Once again, BLACKBAUD has agreed to partner with the AFP Foundation for the "Good Takeover Challenge". Blackbaud will provide a $10 match per donor between March 31 and April 2. You can go online to https://afpglobal.org/be-cause-campaign and give during that time frame and the additional $10 will come back to our local chapter!
