RANKINGS
DID WE BEAT THE WORLD?
Last year, Griffith made headlines by leaping 20 places in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for Sustainability—becoming Queensland’s top performer and one of Australia’s best. This year, we’ve gone even further.
With groundbreaking initiatives like iKnow, weKnow, co-designed to support resilient water and energy solutions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and  Kombumerri Together, which brings reconciliation to life through powerful storytelling, Griffith is setting a new global benchmark.
We know the result. And it’s big.

THIS IS THE HOW
SOLVING THE MYSTERY OF CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME - ONE CELL AT A TIME
Imagine waking up one day with a devastating condition that has no cause, no test, no treatment and no cure. That’s the reality for up to 250,000 Australians who have Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), also called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
They live with devastating symptoms – crippling fatigue, memory problems, pain and balance issues. And medical science has been powerless to help them.
But immune system expert Professor Sonya Marshall-Gradisnik has an idea that could change all that. There’s just one problem: the experiment to prove it doesn’t exist.

THE FUTURE OF VACCINES
A VACCINE THAT COMES...IN A PACKET?
Vaccines save millions of lives every year. But they could save many millions more if they didn’t need needles. Or freezers. Or they were cheaper to make. Or there were vaccines that could tackle all the diseases that don’t have vaccinations yet.
Making vaccines better – and making completely new ones – is complex, expensive and challenging. Disease has a way of throwing new obstacles into your path. Which is why, here on the Gold Coast, land of the Kombumerri peoples, part of the Yugambeh language region, the work of experts like Professor Bernd Rehm never stops – and the results are blowing our minds.
NO MORE NEEDLES?

LIBRARYCORE
THREE YEARS, HUNDREDS OF HOURS, ONE BIG YELLOW TENT
February, 1978. Preparations are under way for Griffith’s first *ever* graduation. The best location has to be the Undercroft – but there’s not enough shade. No problem, as it turns out. It might look chaotic, but when everyone pulls together, anchoring a vast tent in bushland is not nearly as difficult as you might think. Honest.
On the day, 170 students graduate under the canopy from Griffith’s four foundation Schools – Australian Environmental Studies, Humanities, Modern Asian Studies, and Science – with either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science. The University’s first Doctorate was awarded. And the canopy stayed well and truly up. Throughout.
Got fond memories of your own graduation? Then come on back! Seriously, there’s nothing we love more than welcoming you all back to campus. Just drop Nicole a line if you’re in the area, or book into an event. We can’t wait to see you.
