GovCon Talent for the Next Gen: Recruit, Reward, Retain, Retire on 11/19
Now is a critical time in the gov con industry to focus on the 4 R’s: Recruit, Retain, Retire, Reward. How can the industry better engage employees, specifically millennials, as a wave of retirement has happened within the gov con industry? Join the Chamber Policy Committee for 2019 Legislative Agenda Development Sessions
JEach Fall, the Northern Virginia Chamber Policy Committee hosts a number of policy development sessions where members have the opportunity to set the Chamber’s legislative priorities for the coming year. Led by Policy Chair Kathryn Falk of Cox Communications and Vice Chair Tom Rust of Pennoni, Chamber members are invited to participate in these meetings to craft the Chamber’s 2019 Legislative Agenda. Focused on a broad range of policy areas impacting Northern Virginia’s business climate, the Northern Virginia Chamber Legislative Agenda outlines the business community’s policy priorities that the Chamber’s Government Relations staff will advocate for at the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond and with local governments across the region.

The Northern Virginia Chamber 2019 policy development sessions are scheduled as follows:
• Friday, November 9: Healthcare and Energy
• Tuesday, November 13: Wrap Up Session and Other Topics

All meetings will take place from 8:00-9:30 AM at the Northern Virginia Chamber offices, located at 7900 Westpark Drive, Suite A550 (Fifth Floor), Tysons, Virginia 22102. Fairfax County Land Development Services
Fairfax County has been working to improve the speed, consistency and predictability of the development review process. Whether you need to rezone a property or renovate an existing business, the county wants to be a good partner and help you navigate the process. To keep customers apprised of the changes and improvements afoot, Fairfax publishes a quarterly newsletter, Developing News, and also sends out periodic announcements through Letters to Industry email updates. Of particular interest in the recent issue of Developing News is the announcement that electronic plan review will be launched this winter in Fairfax County. Paperless plan review promotes better communication and collaboration among all stakeholders, offering real-time status updates and increased transparency. Stay tuned for more changes that will help the business community work successfully with the county.

Williams Mullen Adds Patent Attorney Clint Brannon to Intellectual Property Practice
Williams Mullen is pleased to announce that Clinton H. “Clint” Brannon has joined the firm as a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice in Tysons. Mr. Brannon has more than 12 years of experience helping clients manage and resolve intellectual property issues and disputes. He has extensive experience in patent litigation in federal district courts and AIA inter partes reviews and ex parte patent reexamination proceedings before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Metro Milestones
On Monday, October 15 General Manager Wiedefeld convened almost 2,000 managers together at the Capital One arena to discuss recent achievements and to look ahead. The milestones reached include that Customer Satisfaction is at 80% - best in four years. And last month’s rail on time performance during the peak period was the best since 2008. On the horizon is the return to automatic train operations, the introduction of a Metro app for fare paying, more cell connections in the tunnels and equipping all buses with traffic signal priority devices by the end of 2009. Free Cyber Apprenticeship Information Session for Employers in the Northern Virginia Region
Small and mid-sized companies who are interested in learning about starting a Cyber Apprenticeship can register for a free information session on Friday, November 16. Registration opens at 8:00AM and the information session is from 11:30AM-12:00PM. Both the U.S. Department of Labor and the Virginia Department of Labor & Industry will be there to explain what it takes to start an Apprenticeship program and to become registered. Mike Forehand, Senior Vice President, Government and Public Affairs at the Northern Virginia Chamber will be moderating one of the panels. Patient First Offering Free Halloween Candy X-Rays
Patient First wants everyone to enjoy the frightful fun this Halloween by offering free digital X-ray imaging of Halloween candy. Bags of candy may be brought into any Patient First Neighborhood Medical Center from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on October 26th through November 3rd. An adult should always inspect the candy before allowing a child to enjoy the sweet rewards of their trick-or-treating. This free X-ray offer is an additional precaution parents may consider. It will help provide parents peace of mind about the treats their children receive by possibly detecting objects like, glass, metal or plastic. Parents still need to provide supervision since some foreign materials may not appear in X-rays. To learn more, click here.

Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States’ Medicare Plans are Top Rated by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for Seventh Consecutive Year
Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States received the highest possible rating of 5 out of 5 stars from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for quality and service for 2019. This marks the seventh year in a row the organization has received the top rating for its Medicare plans offered in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, signaling consistently high performance and value for enrollees. Nationwide, only 14 Medicare plans rated received the highest ratings from CMS, and Kaiser Permanente proudly offers two of these plans to enrollees in the Mid-Atlantic states. KPMG to Expand in Fairfax County, Create More Than 500 New Jobs
Governor Ralph Northam recently announced that KPMG LLP will invest more than $30 million to expand its operations in Fairfax County. Virginia successfully competed against Washington D.C. for this project, which will create more than 500 new jobs. KPMG will occupy up to seven floors of the 20-story Boro Tower under construction in The Boro development adjacent to the Greensboro Metro Station in Tysons Corner. The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia to Launch “Count the Region”
The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia has announced its plans to launch “Count the Region,” an initiative that is dedicated to getting out the count for the 2020 Decennial Census in Northern Virginia and to ensuring that everyone living in the region is counted, counted once, and counted in the right place. Many large federal assistance programs distribute funds to states based solely on decennial census driven statistics. This includes such programs as highway planning and construction, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, special education grants, the National School Lunch Program, Section 8 housing assistance, foster care, Medicaid, Title 1 grants to local education agencies, Head Start, and many other programs that support and sustain the social and civil fabric of our community.
