February 2022 Newsletter

Dear Members and Friends,

The new year has picked up speed. In many respects, it is moving along similar lines to the last one. And this is a great burden for companies, society and states. In Switzerland as in the UK, the major domestic policy issues are sustainable pension reforms, secure energy supplies and sustainable health care systems. In relation to the economy, it is important to maintain or regain as much room for manoeuvre as possible, for example in the area of corporate taxation.

The greatest external challenges stem from the areas of climate change, digitalisation (including cyber security), migration, disrupted supply chains and geopolitical upheavals. The economy is particularly dependent on free trade being strengthened again - despite many populist trends and temptations to renationalise. All these issues continue to be overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The danger posed by the pandemic is declining. However, it has massively impaired global economic development and caused a great need to catch up. In addition, it has ruthlessly revealed to the economy, politics and society where - in crisis management and elsewhere - there is an acute need for action.

Against this backdrop, it is all the more important to know that the BSCC offers its members an outstanding platform through which internationally active companies can network and exchange ideas, with other contributors and alliance partners as well as with leading government representatives from both sides of the channel. Recent events have demonstrated this impressively, in addition to the regular meetings of the BSCC Public Affairs Commission, such as the "Ambassador's Dinner" with HM Ambassador in Bern, personal meetings of BSCC members with the British Minister for International Trade and with the new Trade Envoy of the British Government in Zurich or during the PAC Dinner in Westminster, where the Swiss Ambassador and other top officials from Bern, leading British parliamentarians as well as business representatives from Switzerland and the UK were able to exchange ideas in person.

As a BSCC member, you can directly help to address many of the economic challenges raised at the appropriate point. Make use of this opportunity!

Andreas Hammer

Chair of the BSCC Public Affairs Commission
