Dear readers,

The Tech Council joined with scores of tech-based groups nationwide this week in a letter to the Federal Communications Commission, urging that regulatory body to continue its process of expanding “television white space” broadband technology. The FCC recently adopted a notice of proposed rulemaking on the topic, which sets the stage for further action.

Joining in a letter from Connect Americans Now, the Tech Council noted a mix of technologies will be needed to improve broadband connections in some rural areas. “By continuing to support a hybrid system that leverages traditional technologies like fiber alongside like (white space), we can reduce the cost of bridging the digital divide by as much as 80 percent,” the letter read.

“White space” refers to buffer zones between television channels and other low-frequency transmission channels. Under the right conditions, “white space” can be used to provide broadband signals. Read the full letter here and also read a past InsideWis column by Tech Council President Tom Still.

The Wisconsin Technology Council is pleased to be a partner in the Wisconsin COVID-19 Business Impact survey, which involves regional economic development groups statewide and the UW-Oshkosh. The survey will be sent to businesses every three weeks to gather in-time effects of COVID-19 as well as to plot changes over time. The second installment is in early May. The only way to be included in the second installment is to complete this first installment of the survey. Please complete survey here.
