Shengnan Liu headshotShengnan Liu, MS ’14: Staying Connected from Beijing

Shengnan Liu lives more than 7,500 miles from her alma mater, but she still makes it a priority to remain active with the Maryland Smith community. As a current Smith Beijing Alumni Club leader, Shengnan organizes and attends at least three alumni events each year and keeps connected with fellow Smith alumni in China.

Shengnan grew up in Leshan, Sichuan province of China and knew she wanted to attend school in the United States for her master’s degree. After applying and being admitted to six universities, Shengnan chose to attend Maryland Smith because of its proximity to Washington, DC. As the first member of her family to travel abroad, she was eager to see the opportunities that Smith could offer her.

Pitch Dingman Competition Finals. Pitch Dingman Competition, the Dingman Center’s signature annual competition, provides the university’s most talented student entrepreneurs the opportunity to compete for seed funding and exclusive access to venture development resources. This year, the Dingman Center has expanded the competition by doubling the prize funding and adding three competition tracks for University of Maryland students to enter.

On Tuesday, May 4, watch live on Hopin this year as the finalists pitch their businesses to a panel of expert judges for a chance to win over $70,000 in seed funding. Vote for your favorite startup and they could win $1,000! During a break in the competition, attendees will be able to network with the student entrepreneurs at a virtual Founders Showcase. All winners will be announced at the end of the event, as well as several door prizes for the audience. Learn more about this event, and register to attend!

Veteran Lifelong Leaders Forum promotional graphic

Veterans Lifelong Leaders Forum. We tend to talk about military transition and veteran leadership as individual pursuits, but in truth, they're family affairs. Alongside the 164,000 service members who separate each year, there are an estimated 84,000 spouses and 121,000 children. And for the 7% of service members in dual-military marriages, becoming new veterans is a tandem journey.

Join us on Thursday, May 6 by Zoom as one veteran couple, Erik Henderson, EMBA '16 and Amy McGrath, discuss their journey accompanying each other and their three kids through transition from life as military aviators to leading their communities in business & politics. Register now to attend!

Smith Lifelong Faculty Webinar series promotional graphic

Smith Lifelong Faculty Webinar Series. We hope you can join us for our next Smith lifelong faculty webinar on Tuesday, May 18 with Rellie Derfler-Rozin who will discuss the pitfalls of a zero-sum mindset.

Does she work for the money/perks OR because she likes the job? Will they be winning OR will we be winning? Should we follow the rules OR should we be creative? These questions reflect how we, as humans, tend to think, in many cases in a Zero-Sum, Either-Or fashion. Although people’s motives are complex, we tend to simplify how we think about their motivation to do work. Though negotiations allow for ample opportunities to create win-win situations, in many cases we think about them as a win-lose situation. And though one can be creative while still being ethical, we often tend to associate creativity with deviant rule-breaking. In this webinar, we will discuss research that exemplifies under which conditions people are more likely to adopt a zero-sum mindset (in hiring, negotiations, creativity) and will discuss potential practical implications to resist and combat such mindsets. Register now to attend!
