The year 2013 marks the fourth centenary of the birth of André Le Nôtre (1613-1700), the most famous French gardener and landscape architect. Confidant of Louis XIV, the Sun King, his work represents the height of the French formal garden style, or jardin à la française with its great perspectives, water fountain, a reflection of the absolute monarchy. Le Nôtre worked extensively in Ile-de-France on nine prestigious sites: Fontainebleau, Vaux-le-Vicomte, Saint Germain-en-Laye, the Tuileries Gardens in Paris, Sceaux, Meudon, Saint-Cloud, Chantilly without forgetting of course Versailles, which occupies a privileged position in his extensive work.

The palace of Versailles is therefore organizing a series of events throughout the year that will pay tribute to his talent. For more information please click here.

The palace of Versailles is therefore organizing a series of events throughout the year that will pay tribute to his talent.

The Labyrinth grove. Destroyed in the eighteenth century, this magical place has been brought back to life by an exhibition at the Versailles municipal Library.

- The King flowers: the flamboyance and diversity of the species in the Trianon gardens. From 2 July to 29 September.

- Guiseppe Penone: for its annual encounter with contemporary creation, the Palace of Versailles welcomes the artist Guiseppe Penone, a leader in the Arte Povera movement. Le Nôtre’s gardens will be puncutated by Penone’s tree sculptures, in which vegetable and mineral come together to reveal their essence. From 11 June to 31 October 2013.

- Le Nôtre in perspective: the grand finale of the year, this exhibition offers a surprising new image of the man, his art and his influence. It also explores his fascinating modernity in today’s world. From 22 October to 23 February 2014.
