 Deborah Haven ’79: From Proud Smith Terp to Proud Navy Veteran
Deborah Haven on why she is #UMDSmithProud in celebration of Smith Day: “My Smith School education set me up for success. As I reflect on my experience at UMD, I am so grateful to the school for positioning me to lead and help others excel in their career endeavors.”
Rear Admiral Deborah Haven ’79 says she did everything “backwards” when it came to joining the military, but that didn’t stop her from reaching one of the highest ranks in the U.S. Navy. Deborah grew up in a very patriotic household with multiple family ties to the military as her father was a World War II C-47 pilot who dropped paratroopers in France on D-Day.
Deborah attended Maryland Smith for her undergraduate degree knowing it was a strong business school, but her own tie to the service didn’t come until a few years later.

Get ready for an all-day virtual celebration of Smith Day 2020! Smith Terps worldwide will come together on Thursday, November 12 to celebrate the strong and resilient Maryland Smith community. Are you ready? Here’s what you can do to prepare for the day:
- Be a Smith Day Champion - send a Save The Date message to your classmates, favorite professors or Smith staff, and let them know how you plan to celebrate Smith Day
- Find photos from your time on Campus - Pull out an old photo album (we know you have one) or just sift through your social media photos for your favorite Smith/Maryland photo(s) to upload to the Smith Day Photo Mosaic
- Identify four Smith Terps - Think about those Smith Terps who have made an impact on your life/career and be ready to send a direct note of thanks to them as a part of the Smith Day Gratitude Challenge
- Form Your Game Night Team - Gather your old buddies, fraternity brothers, sorority sisters, roommates, classmates or current Smith colleagues together for an evening of fun
Whether you’re in Beijing, College Park, India, Philly, San Francisco, or anywhere in between, join fellow Smith Terps around the globe for this year’s all-day virtual celebration.
