How to Get the Meeting
Virginia Thumm, President, Virginia Fundraising Consultants
Tuesday, February 20, 2018
11:30AM TO 1:00PM
Virginia Thumm has worked in the non-profit sector in New York and Southeastern Virginia for more than 30 years, expanding the financial capacity of organizations in the arts, education and social services. A veteran of dozens of successful fundraising campaigns, she has personally solicited millions of dollars to enhance the missions of non-profits. A native of Norfolk, VA, she has been a prominent figure in the non-profit field, and is affiliated with many professional organizations, including the Association for Fundraising Professionals, and has served on several non-profit boards.
Often, the hardest part of a solicitation is getting in the door. This workshop will offer some new and clever strategies for getting the meeting—even for those prospects who are most elusive! Then, Virginia will lead a discussion about the preparation that will ensure your meeting is successful.
Agenda:
11:30am Registration/Networking
12:00 pm Program/Lunch

VFRI is excited to announce Tom Ahern as the 2018 Keynote Presenter!
In November 2016, the New York Times called Tom Ahern "one of the country's most sought-after creators of fundraising messages." He specializes in applying the discoveries of psychology and neuroscience to the day-to-day business of attracting and retaining donors. He's authored six well-received books on that topic; his latest is What Your Donors Want...and Why!
Each year, he trains thousands of fundraisers internationally through conferences and webinars. Read more about Tom and his work on the VFRI website.
Save the Date for this energizing educational opportunity - July 18- 19, 2018 at the Omni Richmond Hotel. In addition to Tom's engaging keynote, VFRI features a broad range of workshop topics of value to development professionals, executive directors, board members, and other volunteers who wish to advance their professional skills. VFRI 2018 will also provide opportunities to network with your peers and provide more peer-to-peer learning opportunities throughout the Institute.

Here are a few key points related to the recent tax cuts and jobs act:
· The bill was signed into law on December 22, 2017.
· Most provisions took effect January 1, 2018.
· A majority of the individual tax provisions expire December 31, 2025.
As a professional fundraiser, you should be generally aware of the changes. Familiarize yourself with the changes to the tax brackets. Most taxpayers will find themselves with more disposable income due to lower brackets which means that they may now have the opportunity to give more to the charitable organizations they care about. And, those with donor advised funds may have an increased interest in supporting your organization.
