May 2023
Professor Cindy Shannon AM, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Indigenous, Diversity and Inclusion)
Today we recognise National Sorry Day—a day Australia remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, now known as ‘The Stolen Generations’—and with National Reconciliation Week from 27 May to 3 June, it is fitting that this edition of the newsletter celebrates our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander alumni.
The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2023 is Be a Voice for Generations, encouraging all Australians to be a voice for Reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives—where we live, work and socialise. I am proud of the commitment that Griffith University has made to reconciliation, through both our Reconciliation Statement and our support for an indigenous Voice to Parliament.
Griffith consistently produces high numbers of Indigenous graduates each year. Below, meet Bianca, a proud Wiradjuri woman and the third generation in her family to study at Griffith. Learn about her determination to use her skills and opportunities to give back to her community.
As we move along a path of inclusion, equality and understanding, we will continue to connect with you, our alumni, and highlight the work you're doing as a voice for future generations.
