Demo Day and WET Center’s 10th Birthday Celebration a Success!

On Thursday, December 7th, the WET Center held a celebration to mark ten thriving years on Fresno State’s campus, helping to raise the profile of water, energy and ag technology companies in the community. Part of the Demo Day program included five-minute pitches given by the 12 companies of the Valley Ventures Fall 2017 Cohort. Following their pitches, the cohort members were presented with certificates to honor their graduation from Valley Ventures. Congratulations to AQUAOSO, Avsonic, Benchmark Intelligence, BovControl, Deep Root Irrigation (DRI), Drought Diet Products, DSPii, ECO2Mix, Fluid Pulse, GroGuru, Nanomass, and REDtrac! The evening festivities ended in warm conversation accompanied by Fresno State Wine and live music from the University High School Jazz Band.

The Technology Innovation Evaluation (TIE) Committee is a component of the vetting process that innovators and entrepreneurs can use to assess their water- and/or energy-related technology to move it from concept to commercialization. The TIE committee is a team of professionals who bring their extensive technological expertise combined with personnel who have proven technical success in all sectors of the water and energy field.

The TIE committee conducts a confidential, independent review of the technology, assesses the commercial feasibility of the technology, and proposes follow-up actions that can be taken to move the technology toward validation and possible commercialization.

Joining the committee and assisting in vetting new technologies is an important way to become part of the effort to maximize our precious natural resources. If you are interested in serving on the TIE committee or if you know an innovator or entrepreneur who could benefit from TIE, please refer them to the BTV Innovation Cluster! For more information or to participate, please contact Helle Petersen at hellep@csufresno.edu or call 559.278.2066.

 WET Member Highlight:

WaterBit is a three-year-old start-up company based in San Jose, California,
with an office at the Water and Energy Technology (WET) Center. The company’s
cofounder, Manu Pillai, grew up in Nigeria and saw firsthand a fundamental issue –
the need to use resources more efficiently to support a growing population.

WaterBit is an autonomous control and monitoring system
engineered to be low energy, unobtrusive, and reliable.

Connor Cunningham, a field specialist for WaterBit, credits Claude Laval
for the company becoming a WET member, being that he was the one who
connected him to WaterBit Inc. who had previously made
the strategic decision to rent out office space at the center.

Cunningham also says that this market is much more complex than most people
and the media give it credit for, and expresses the importance of humbling yourself
and taking a student’s approach to investing or starting a business
in order to  really understand the methods of key players
who have something of long-lasting value.
