| | The cost of living. Caring responsibilities. Long hours in a low-paid job alongside studying for a degree. The students eligible for our Brighter Futures Scholarship Program face big challenges, says VC Professor Carolyn Evans – and if they get just a little bit of support at the right time, they’ll make a big difference in the world. Could you be the person to help them? “I love meeting our alumni and hearing about your achievements – whether you’re inspiring the next generation of kids as a primary school teacher, leading your own business or breaking records as an Olympic athlete,” she says. “When you’re reflecting on the challenges and triumphs of your journey, I would ask you to think about how you can help the students of the future succeed, too.” |

| | "BEING A REFUGEE IS PART OF MY IDENTITY" |
| | Sanesie Dukuly grew up in a camp in Guinea. At night, he went to bed hungry and dreamed of getting a better education. When he came to Australia, he worked all hours as a security guard to support his family, until a manager asked him: “Have you thought of going to school?” – and Griffith welcomed him in. Now, he’s a lecturer, helping people build their skills and knowledge to create inclusive, resilient and empowered communities. And he’s determined to help fellow newcomers build new lives. |

| | | | | Tropical white sandy beaches. Crystal blue waters. A way of life steeped in culture and community. The Pacific Small Island Developing States might seem like a paradise on Earth – but rising sea levels and extreme weather events mean their future could be very different. Now, their people are determined to show the rest of the world how to be truly ambitious when it comes to meeting the challenges of climate change. They’re working with nature, with new concepts of nationhood – and with each other. |

| | | | IT'S NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK - LET'S STEP FORWARD TOGETHER |
| | As you read this, Griffith is marking this year’s National Sorry Day (26 May) and National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) with a host of events across all campuses – from workshops to webinars, and morning teas to market days. And, of course, there’s our National Sorry Day panel discussion. This year, our experts explore the question: How do we create the conditions for Indigenous Australians to thrive – academically, socially and culturally? (While we get it ready to go online, check out last year’s discussion, Truth-telling: Now more than ever). This year’s theme, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future – calling all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push onwards as past lessons guide us. |

| | | | MARIAH WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE, YOU CAN, TOO |
| | Mariah Howell lived through violent circumstances and incarcerated family, enduring legacies of generational trauma that shaped her early years. Now, she’s in a place of strength, supported by her partner and family while finishing a demanding degree in Social Work at Griffith. The Brighter Futures Scholarship Program has been the difference between her graduating and dropping out completely, Mariah says. “It has eased the pressure of living expenses and the lost income from pursuing my career goals.” The program helps students who excel at their studies but are also experiencing financial or personal hardship, enabling them to make a lasting impact on the world. Every gift, big or small, counts. We’ll also double whatever you donate, making your gift even more valuable. |
