A Letter from our President, Wendy Glick

As I write my monthly comments for this newsletter I am enjoying a warm breeze drifting through my office window. Spring is in the air, finally! This is my favorite season and Easter is my favorite holiday. Maybe it is because I work in a faith based environment or maybe it’s because this is the only time of year you can buy “Peeps”! Whatever the reason, our world is awakening after a cold winter nap and I am excited about it.

And I am even more excited about our upcoming special session entitled the “Future of Philanthropic Culture” presented by Melissa S. Brown of Melissa S. Brown and Associates, LLC. Melissa comes highly recommended by our own AFP board of director member and scholarship chair Beth Shearer. Beth describes Melissa’s presentation as “eye-opening and mentally challenging." In the outline for Melissa’s presentation she promises to share with us the strategies that have worked “to help development officers with too little time gain the attention of 3-4 distinct 'niche markets' for donors.” Development officer with too little time you say? That certainly spoke to me!

I hope that you will join me on Thursday, April 5th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mark Arts, 1307 N. Rock Road, for this very special professional development session on the “Future of Philanthropic Culture." Reservations can be made here. And after the session, for those who would like to continue the fun, we will gather at Newport Grill in Bradley Fair for networking and sweets! I plan to make a day of it. I hope you can too!

Member Spotlight

 Lynette, Murphy

Name: Lynette Murphy
Number of years as an AFP Member: 16
Family: Husband Dan, a project manager at Koch-Glitsch; daughter Mattie, 21, a senior at K-State who got engaged recently; son Gabe, 15, a freshman at East High’s IB program who is a boy genius; two old rescue cocker spaniels Rocky and Tutu; a leopard gecko Herbie; and various indoor and outdoor fish who shall not be named. Fortunate to have my parents, 92 and 89, still living. Three siblings who claim me as their baby sister.
Occupation: Director of Development, Via Christi Health
Accomplishments: In addition to producing two amazing kids and being a servant of Jesus? Obtained CFRE in 2016 - if I can do it, you can, too! Lead fundraising for $6 million Advanced Education in General Dentistry facility at WSU. Since at Via Christi, secured a couple gifts from first-time donors to our organization, including $250,000 from The Sunderland Foundation.
Hobbies: Floral and interior decorating, playing guitar and singing, traveling – going to Ireland this summer! Trying to learn to play the ukulele.
Reasons you love being a member of AFP: The relationships made through Board service and attending events ranks #1. The educational component is important, especially when tracking for CFRE certification or recertification. The regional and national conferences are a great way to expand your learning! And, OK, the events with wine are good as well.
A funny story or situation you have experienced in your profession: Anyone who knew our dearly departed fellow fundraiser Sharon Miles knows how much she respected life, especially when it came to creatures who are not human. While working at Wichita State, several of the development staff went for an after-work cocktail on a local restaurant patio. Sharon discovered that a fly was drowning in a glass of wine. She immediately got into rescue mode. Sure enough, she fished the insect out, put it in a drop of water – and revived it! We didn’t know whether to laugh or congratulate her on her healing skills. I hope those who were there who are reading this don’t refute my story.
