A message from the Chair

As the Chair of the Australasian Centre for PASS Strategic Advisory Board, it gives me pleasure to announce the recruitment of four external representatives from Universities around Australia. This followed an Expression of Interest selection process involving a sub-committee of the Board. The new representatives are:

  • Associate Professor Jane Skalicky, Director, Student Academic Success, University of Tasmania
  • Dr Chelsea Avard, A/Manager. Student Academic Skills, The University of Adelaide
  • Georgina Barratt-See, Manager, Peer Learning Programs, University of Technology, Sydney
  • Linah Tan, National PASS Program Coordinator, Torrens University, Melbourne

Jane, Chelsea, Georgina and Linah have been instrumental in coordinating PASS programs in their own institutions and therefore will bring considerable expertise to guide the Australasian Centre for PASS in a range of areas, including strategic advice, planning, promotion, training, research and the annual conference. I look forward to working with them on the Board.

Inaugural On Campus PASS Supervisor Training

August was a big month for the Australasian Centre for PASS (ACP)! We welcomed 15 new PASS Supervisors to the community at our inaugural F2F PASS Supervisor Training held at Griffith University, Gold Coast. Please join us in extending our congratulations and welcoming the new members to the PASS Community!

This was a special edition of PASS Supervisor Training as we were joined by special guest and International Certified Senior Trainer, Sally Rogan. The training ended on a high note, with Sally Rogan certifying 3 trainers for the ACP. We would like to thank Melissa Zaccagnini and Sally Rogan for their assistance in this process. Congratulations to Heba Allouche, Juanita Shaw and Fiona Vance-Peachey who are now Certified (UMKC) International Trainers of SI/PASS for the ACP!

The Director ACP, Associate Professor Michelle Whitford presented Sally Rogan with a Golden Honorary Award from UMKC.

Australian Peer Programs Network

Contributed by Nathan Seng (Manager, Student Transition, Mentoring and Financial Support, Griffith University)

The Australasian Peer Programs Network is a community of practice for peer learning and mentoring coordinators from higher education institutions in Australia and New Zealand. The network was started as an initiative of the STARS conference and has since grown to have several state/regional chapters and members from numerous universities and institutions across both countries.

State/regional groups aim to support, encourage, and enable transformation through research informed, co-created knowledge sharing about student peer learning, mentoring, partnerships, and leadership. Network members support each other with advice and encouragement and ultimately the network results in services being more accessible and valued by students.

If you’d like more information or are keen to attend a regional network meeting, please email transition@griffith.edu.au.

Georgina discussed setting appropriate ground rules for sessions, managing conflicts of interest, and issues around student confidentiality.
