Hello,
Thank you to everyone who attended our first meeting and pop-up workshop for 2018. Virginia Thumm, President of Virginia Fundraising Consultants, kicked-off the year with an engaging conversation, and attendees walked away with tools to implement immediately. We have made the presentation available here for easy reference. Our first “Pop-Up” educational session was held last week and provided an open forum for those new to the profession to ask questions on their mind.
On February 19th our very own past president Connie McKenzie, CFRE, Senior Associate VP of Development & Alumni Relations, EVMS, will be offering an In-Depth Look at Preparing for a Major Fundraising Initiative. Elise Krikau will join her and brings over 20 years of professional experience across the healthcare, education, and human services sectors to her role as Senior Consultant at Campbell & Company. I hope you’ll join us!
Don’t forget to utilize this newsletter to search our job postings, renew or update your membership, link directly to Facebook and more! If you haven’t already, please “like” our page on Facebook to keep updated and see photos from events. We also have a link to the Virginia Fundraising Institute’s Conference registration in July. I can personally attest after seeing keynote Kishshana Palmer speak at the AFP Leadership Academy last fall that this will be a great conference! Our chapter will provide additional scholarships to VFRI this year. Stay tuned for more information!
Thank you for being a part of the AFP-Hampton Roads Chapter. I hope you’ll take advantage of all the professional development and networking opportunities we have planned and bring a guest!
I look forward to seeing each of you soon!
Warm Regards,

360 Degree Campaign Planning: An In-Depth Look at Preparing for a Major Fundraising Initiative
Connie McKenzie, CFRE, Senior Associate Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations, EVMS
Elise Krikau,Senior Consultant, Campbell & Company
Preparing for a campaign is a rigorous, multifaceted process. Where should you direct your focus ahead of a major fundraising initiative, and what does it truly take to be campaign ready? Eastern Virginia Medical School has been confronting these tricky questions as it ramps up for an upcoming campaign.
From rebalancing portfolios, focusing on staffing and systems, and strengthening planned and major giving to building a versatile case for support and assigning staff to partner with board members, the EVMS case study presents a powerful example of campaign readiness.
EVMS’s Senior Associate Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations and consulting partner will walk through the step-by-step process they have followed—and explain how attendees can apply it to their own campaign plans.
Agenda:
11:30 am Registration/Networking- Learn about 2019 Committees!

They're Just Words on Paper
Tom Koller, President, IMPACT Communications
A high-energy, hands-on presentation on the tools needed to be an effective, impactful communicator. The idea is simple: Take your message – just words on paper – and
bring that message to life, creating what Tom refers to as “impactful communication” in which the audience not only remembers you, the speaker, but most importantly your message long after you have left the room.
Putting it all together - developing attention-grabbing writing with dynamic delivery - isn’t always as easy as it sounds. Ensure that you understand your objectives, your audience and their needs, and learn to use written and verbal communication tools to craft the perfect message.

Diversity & Inclusion
The Lasting Effect of the Government Shutdown
With the recent government shutdown, there were several opportunities to share your voice with elected officials. While volume is generally higher when issues arise, it’s a good reminder that reaching out to elected government officials should be an on-going effort. Take a moment to ensure you know who your elected officials are – city/county, state and federal. As a fundraising professional, we have the opportunity to opine on topics that are personal and/or to share information relative to the type of non-profit organization you represent. Please refer to the link below on tips for writing letters and emails to government officials.
