Michelle-Whitford-webpageHappy New Year to you all!

I hope you managed to enjoy some downtime over the summer break - those of you who were not studying during Trimester 3 that is - and are refreshed for another exciting academic year in 2018.

My name is Michelle Whitford and I am the Acting Dean (Learning and Teaching), standing in for Professor Ross Guest who is away on research leave until July 2018. Prior to stepping into the Dean role, I was Deputy Dean (Learning and Teaching) with Griffith Business School. I have also had the pleasure of being a Program Director of the Bachelor of International Tourism and Hotel Management with the School in the recent past.

In this edition

In this edition of The GBS Edge I am pleased to share with you tips to help relieve exam anxiety, news about employment opportunities, as well as some fantastic student stories. We hope the information provided is of assistance to you with your studies, and it affirms that choosing Griffith as your study destination was an excellent decision.

We are always keen to hear from our current students and our graduates (also known as alumni) about your achievements. If you have anything you would like to share with the Griffith Business School community, please forward your contributions to gbscommunity@griffith.edu.au

Exams don't have to be scary

The students who get the highest marks are not necessarily the ones who are the smartest, but the ones who are the most organised and well-prepared throughout the trimester.

But sometimes, no matter how prepared you are for an exam, it’s hard to avoid some anxiety.

Watch the short clip below to hear seven tips from ASAPThought to help you beat exam anxiety.

Exam Anxiety YouTube

Top tips for exam day

1. Get there early. Make sure you arrive early so that you have time to get settled. Arriving late can cause anxiety and get you started on the wrong foot.

2. Answer what you want, when you want. You don’t have to answer the questions in the order they are presented. Be a rebel and do the last ones first, or first ones last. You may be less anxious if you answer all the easy questions first and then allocate the remaining time to the more difficult ones.

3. Review your answers. Finished your exam with minutes to spare? Don’t leave early. Instead, use that time to review your answers. You will kick yourself if you accidentally missed a multiple choice question, or the short essay question on the back page that you didn’t see because you rushed out of the exam room.

Global opportunities are yours for the taking

IniWhen Ini Akinsanmi graduates, she will have a world of experience to set her apart in the job market – literally. The 21-year-old recently completed a global internship in China and, in doing so, has added valuable skills to her resume.

Ini is studying the Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Government and International Relations and says that on top of having an international experience, the job placement allowed her to step out of her comfort zone, giving her a serious skills upgrade.

I ended up doing marketing and communications over there, which was not my study area at all,” she says. “But you should be open to whatever comes your way; if you limit yourself then you’re just going to lose opportunities. I now have the skills that a lot of people in even a marketing or communications degree may not even have because I’ve had on-the-job training.” …read more.

If you want to enhance your study by completing a part of your degree overseas, you can spend one or two trimesters abroad at a partner university and have this credited towards your Griffith program.

Applications close 1 February 2018.

Extra opportunities put GBS at the top of the list for Georgia

Georgia KellyGriffith’s most recent scholarship recipient hadn’t even decided where she wanted to study until a visit to the Tertiary Studies Expo in 2017. But after discovering all the opportunities Griffith Business School could offer her in the tourism and hospitality sector, Georgia Kelly says her mind was made up.

Staff really took the time to speak to me and explain what the course and the University could give me. And Griffith had so much to offer in terms of scholarships and international experience and study abroad that it made the choice easy.”

The incoming Bachelor of International Tourism and Hotel Management student was recently awarded the Pro Vice Chancellor (Business) Academic Excellence Scholarship, which will see her receive $15,000 over her degree to help with her educational aspirations.
