There is a clamour for in person
events. This is in reaction to a
year of Zoom meetings and the
ardent wish to “get back to
something like normal.” It is
the extroverts who are
clamouring most loudly. The
introverts, including those like
me who can be an extrovert when
the occasion demands, are in no
hurry. That is not because we
are anti-social. We are just
practical. The pandemic is still
with us and indoor meetings
carry the highest risk which is
why risk mitigation and social
distancing are needed.
Anyway, what is the point of an
in-person event if you can’t
mingle beyond the 7 other people
on your table? What is the point
if you can’t walk across and
introduce yourself to someone
whom you have always wanted (and
maybe even needed) to meet? What
is the point if you can’t greet
a longtime friend on the
opposite side of the room? There
is no point when you can’t move
around and network.
The
only time there is a point is
for AGMs and other general
meetings for reasons of
transparency and engagement. As
we all found out last year,
purely virtual AGMs have their
limitations. That is why the
Chamber’s 180th AGM on 23 June
at 10.30am will be a hybrid
event with 50 people in a
meeting room and everyone else
joining virtually all equally
enabled to vote via Convene’s
AGM platform. Do mark your
calendars to save the date!
After all, it is not every day
you attend a 180th general
meeting.
