Mayor Slay Proposes $15 Minimum Wage in St. Louis City
By Andrew L. Metcalf

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay has called on the St. Louis Board of Aldermen to raise the minimum wage in the city to $15. As written, the proposal would incrementally increase the minimum wage from $7.65 an hour until it reaches $15 in 2020. Businesses that have 15 employees or fewer would be exempt.

The City has never before set its own minimum wage, which is currently $7.65 under Missouri law. If passed, the proposal would likely be met with legal challenges to determine whether the City has the authority to implement its own minimum wage.
Missouri Governor Vetoes Right-to-Work Legislation
By Andrew L. Metcalf

In last month's newsletter, we reported on the right-to-work legislation that was then-pending in the Missouri legislature. After the Missouri Senate passed the bill by a 21-13 vote, Governor Nixon vetoed it on June 4, 2015. "Right-to-work is wrong for Missouri, it's wrong for the middle-class - and it must never become the law of the Show-Me State," Nixon said in remarks released by his press office.

The bill now heads back to the legislature. An override of the Governor's veto would require 17 more votes in the House, and two more in the Senate.
