FOCUS ON THE NEW YORK CITY CHAPTER ~ AUGUST 2023 NEWSLETTER
I hope this newsletter finds you well. As the summer months have flown by, there is something about August that makes me realize our summer days are numbered, which is a good time to stop for end of summer reflections. It is hard to believe that it has been almost one year since I became the ACC-NYC Chapter President. When I became President in October 2022, we were coming out of a seemingly never-ending pandemic, facing inflation woes, and embarking on many rounds of layoffs in Big Tech and other corporations.
As a Chapter, we also faced certain challenges such as increasing member engagement in this new hybrid work environment while delivering Sponsor value, the need to reinvigorate our Members In Transition (MIT) and Women & Gender Groups, along with navigating the increased costs of events and competition from other local bar associations. I am happy to report that we have worked hard on these focus areas to deliver value to our members and sponsors; and have remained a leading legal association for in-house counsel in the New York City metropolitan area.
With the help of our sponsors, we hosted some amazing summer events.  Highlights include: Pizza Making class at the Institute of Culinary Education; Mini-Golf at the Swingers Club; Napa Wine Tasting at the Hemsley Club; and a 90s summer rooftop event at Arizona Beverage’s HQ. We also hosted two amazing Women & Gender Group networking events: Cocktails and Lip Gloss making at Daintree Rooftop and a discussion on "Burnout” at The Glass Ceiling followed by cocktails.
On September 12, we will host our ACC-NYC Annual Meeting and half-day CLE event entitled Executive Decisions With a Legal Lens at Fordham Law School. The event will feature a fireside chat with Lynn Haaland, Chief Privacy Officer, Deputy General Counsel, Product and AI at Zoom Video Communications, Inc. and 3 CLE sessions:
  • Privilege and Ethical Issues in a Data Driven World;
  • In-House Counsel’s Guide On How To Manage Key Issues in Working With Public Boards; and
  • Russian Criminal Enterprises: Protecting Your Network From Unwelcome Guests.
The event will also feature a kick off with an American Tea and Coffee meet-up and a networking reception. Register here to secure your space.
Lastly, I am excited to announce our awesome line-up of upcoming Fall events. We are hosting a number of Signature Social events including a Mixology Event at the Raines Law Room, as well as a third Women & Gender Group Event, a Diversity & Inclusion Event, a Pro Bono Event, and a Career Day event at Fordham Law School to benefit Fordham Law students. We also have great CLE webinars and in-person events that always include a networking component. For more information on these events, please regularly visit our events calendar
We strive to host Chapter events that our members will find relevant. On behalf of myself and the ACC-NYC Board, we look forward to welcoming you at one of our upcoming events and you getting more involved with the ACC-NYC Chapter and sponsors.

Respectfully,

Tia L. Gilford
President, ACC New York City Chapter
