JUST ANNOUNCED: GovCon Talent for the Next Gen: Recruit, Reward, Retain, Retire
Now is a critical time in the gov con industry to focus on the 4 R’s: Recruit, Retain, Retire, Reward. Capital Region Workforce Summit on 12/5
The Northern Virginia Chamber, in cooperation with the Greater Washington Partnership, invites you to the Capital Region Workforce Summit – a conversation with top leaders in the business community that will address the most pressing issues affecting our region’s workforce on Wednesday, December 5 from 8:30 – 11:00 AM at the Inova Conference Center in Fairfax. Despite the critical role that human capital plays in business outcomes, it has struggled to gain and retain its seat at the executive table. Even with one of the most educated populations in the United States, firms of all sizes in the Capital Region are struggling to recruit, develop, and retain the talent they need. The featured keynote panel, moderated by Jason Miller, Chief Executive Officer, Greater Washington Partnership, includes: Alison Corazzini, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Capital One and Kevin Virostek, Greater Washington Managing Partner, EY. Annual State of Healthcare on 11/13
Join the business leaders throughout the region for the Chamber’s Annual State of Healthcare in the Commonwealth event featuring Secretary Daniel Carey, M.D., Virginia’s Secretary of Health & Human Resources and a robust panel of healthcare experts from across the healthcare industry on Tuesday, November 13 from 3:00-5:00PM at the Northern Virginia Chamber. Northern Virginia Chamber Policy Luncheon Series Continues on November 1st with Senators George Barker and Jeremy McPike

On Thursday, November 1 from 12:00-1:30 PM, the Northern Virginia Chamber will continue its policy luncheon series with two members of the Senate of Virginia - Senator George Barker (D-Fairfax) and Senator Jeremy McPike (D-Prince William). The luncheon will take place at the Chamber’s offices at 7900 Westpark Drive, Suite A550 (Fifth Floor) in Tysons. These monthly luncheons are designed to be informal opportunities for Northern Virginia Chamber members to interact with elected leaders from across the region and across the Commonwealth. Senator Barker has represented the 39th Senate District since 2008, which includes parts of Fairfax County, Prince William County, and the City of Alexandria. He sits on the Finance Committee, Education and Health Committee, and the General Laws and Technology Committee. Senator McPike has represented the 29th Senate District since 2016, which includes the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park as well as part of Prince William County. He sits on the General Laws and Technology Committee, Local Government Committee, and the Rehabilitation and Social Services Committee. Join the Chamber Policy Committee for 2019 Legislative Agenda Development Sessions
Each Fall, the Northern Virginia Chamber Policy Committee hosts a number of policy development sessions where members have the opportunity to set the Chamber’s legislative priorities for the coming year. Led by Policy Chair Kathryn Falk of Cox Communications and Vice Chair Tom Rust of Pennoni, Chamber members are invited to participate in these meetings to craft the Chamber’s 2019 Legislative Agenda. Focused on a broad range of policy areas impacting Northern Virginia’s business climate, the Northern Virginia Chamber Legislative Agenda outlines the business community’s policy priorities that the Chamber’s Government Relations staff will advocate for at the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond and with local governments across the region.

The Northern Virginia Chamber 2019 policy development sessions are scheduled as follows:
• Wednesday, October 24: Education and Workforce
• Tuesday, October 30: Economic Diversification and Business Climate
• Friday, November 9: Healthcare and Energy
• Tuesday, November 13: Wrap Up Session and Other Topics

All meetings will take place from 8:00-9:30 AM at the Northern Virginia Chamber offices, located at 7900 Westpark Drive, Suite A550 (Fifth Floor), Tysons, Virginia 22102. Leadership Fairfax’s 30th Anniversary Celebration
Leadership Fairfax is turning 30! Celebrate 30 years of community partnerships, volunteer projects and leadership development with fellow leaders, colleagues, friends and alumni. the 30th Anniversary event celebrates Leadership Fairfax’s beginnings as a program of the then Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce through its development into an independent community nonprofit that has graduated over 1,800 alumni. The event will feature entertainment, signature cocktails, dancing, an awesome silent auction, and networking, as well as TEDx style talks and much more! Cozen O’Connor Public Strategies Continues its Nationwide Expansion
Cozen O’Connor Public Strategies announced that Thomas A. Lisk, an attorney and government relations professional who has represented business interests and trade associations before the Virginia General Assembly since 1980, has joined the firm as a managing director of its fast-growing Public Strategies Group in Richmond, VA. Lisk comes to the firm from Eckert Seamans, where he represented a wide range of businesses in regulatory matters before Commonwealth of Virginia agencies, boards, and commissions, including the State Corporation Commission. 5th Annual Joshua Ball to Prevent Teen Suicide
The Josh Anderson Foundation (JAF) will be hosting its 5th Annual Joshua Ball fundraising gala on Friday, November 2nd from 7:00-10:00PM, at the Josephine Butler Parks Center in Washington, DC. JAF is a non-profit organization working toward the day when no teen turns to suicide. Its work has touched a number of local schools - most recently through its signature program, our minds matter, which is currently implemented in fourteen high schools in Northern Virginia. At the event, VA State Senator Creigh Deeds will be sharing his personal story of loss, survival and hope following his son's death by suicide in 2013. LGS Innovations’ Laser Technology to Bring HD Video from the Moon
LGS Innovations announced that it will be supporting the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Orion EM-2 Optical Communications (O2O) project. LGS Innovations will provide an optical modem that will enable broadband data communications to and from the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle designed to take humans into lunar orbit. Laser communications, the next-generation space communications technology, can transmit data over long distances at rates up to 100 times faster than traditional radio frequency systems. The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia Honors Ellen and Jim Dyke with the 2018 Community Leadership Award & Celebrates 40th Anniversary
Ellen and Jim Dyke were recognized by the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia for their history of passionate leadership and philanthropy with the 2018 Community Leadership Award at the Raise the Region Gala held on Friday, October 5, 2018 at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner. The Community Leadership Award is the longest standing community-based recognition award in Northern Virginia. The award is presented annually for outstanding commitment and dedication to improving the quality of life for all Northern Virginians. The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia raised $636,000 and hosted 650 business leaders, philanthropists and community organizers at this year’s event. It also celebrated its 40th anniversary, with more than $50 million in grants and scholarships distributed to respond to critical need and seed innovation in our region and beyond since its inception in 1978. BAE Systems, Inc. to Relocate Headquarters and 350 Jobs to Fairfax County
Following a regional search, BAE Systems Inc. announced October 8 it will move its headquarters to Fairfax County. The global defense, security and aerospace firm said it signed a lease for office space at 2941 Fairview Park Drive in the Falls Church area of the county, and will move about 350 employees to the space in 2020, furthering Fairfax County’s strengths in the aerospace and defense sector. Smart Cities Council Workshop October 23-24
The Commonwealth of Virginia invites you to a 2-day Smart Cities Readiness Workshop targeting actionable outcomes to improve the livability, workability, and sustainability of Virginia communities. The Workshop will identify ways to lower the barriers to entry for smart communities across the Commonwealth and make the benefits available to every citizen. Volunteer Fairfax Names New CEO
The Volunteer Fairfax board of directors has named Steve Mutty as the nonprofit’s new chief executive. Mutty recently served as executive director of the Alexandria (Va.) Seaport Foundation, a nonprofit that serves at-risk youth through adult mentoring and project-based learning. Mutty’s broad volunteer experience includes serving as Chairman of the Board of Best Buddies Capital Region, an organization that supports young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and has served as a mentor for disabled young adults transitioning to independent living. He also sat on the fundraising event planning committees of Best Buddies International, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society-National Capitol Area and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Real Estate Games.
