Over the last five years Latin America has produced a new generation of startups backed by the region’s tech investors. VC funding from local and international investors drove venture deals in Latin America to a record high in 2016 – increasing from 182 in 2015 to 197 in 2016 – according to LAVCA data. More companies had access to capital than ever before.
The 2017 Latin American Startup Directory includes early stage companies that have received US$1m+ in funding via a minimum of 2 rounds of investment and are still in operation, as tracked by LAVCA. The no. of companies has grown by 44 since the inaugural list was published in April 2016.
The Latin American Startup Directory includes actively funded startups but not companies that have been acquired or realized an IPO. Click here for a separate list of highlighted companies that have raised US$1m+ via 2+ rounds and were acquired/listed.

LAVCA GP Member firms are invited to participate in the next edition of The Latin American Private Equity Deal Book & ESG Cases CALL FOR SUBMISSION.
The first, second, and third editions were produced in 2014, 2015, and 2016 in response to demand from LPs for specific examples of private equity case studies.
A successful track record is an important indicator of the maturity of a private equity market. Again in 2017, LAVCA and a panel of LP judges will select a series of private equity awards to bring recognition to fund managers with successful deal cases in Latin America. Open exclusively to LAVCA Members, any firm who submits a case study to be published in the Deal Book will be automatically considered for the award. See 2016 and 2017 winners.
The LAVCA Deal Book and Award helps illustrate to institutional investors, policy makers, business owners, and other stakeholders the value of private equity in Latin America.

Mosyle is a Brazilian edtech startup with global ambitions to improve the classroom experience by using mobile devices that just raised an undisclosed round from DGF Investimentos to fund its expansion into the US market.
In this interview with Mosyle Founder & CEO, Alcyr Araujo, we learn:
1. Focus is subtractive: Mosyle sold off the first product they built to stay focused on their core opportunity.
2. Vertical word of mouth is powerful: Mosyle signed up over 2,000 schools as clients, in only 14 months, with no paid marketing.
3. Bootstrapping 101: The founders ran a parallel business building apps for third parties to fund Mosyle until Mosyle’s revenue was covering all their costs.
