A Message from the Chapter President, Mike Wescott

 c24ac2_34c8cb424f984dc8a39a4440a09a0d98_mv2 Dear friends,
Never in my mind would I have thought that we would find ourselves at this place
in our country and even in our world. So many time honored traditions and
practices that we now are forced to evaluate. The science seems clear though
that what we are doing and the safeguards put into place to help slow the spread
of the virus will work if we adhere to them and be patient and vigilant in our daily
lives. I’d never even heard the term social distancing before – of course as a
fundraiser, that seems contradictory to what we do – so we must change our
approach to engaging donors for the time being.
As a chapter, we also need to modify our practices and routines. Already the regularly scheduled meeting of your board was cancelled for March. Earlier this week, I conferred with those who are responsible for planning and scheduling our professional development programs and it was the agreement that we need to postpone our April and May sessions. Our next session will be sometime in June and it would be our hope that we could reschedule April and May’s sessions for sometime this summer or fall.

Many of our committees that would typically meet during these months will most likely do so virtually which is probably the best we can do right now.

Just this morning, this piece from the Institute for Charitable Giving came into my inbox. I thought it particularly pertinent at this time. “It’s a puzzling phenomenon. It may seem counterintuitive, but in tough
financial times people actually give more. But they give to organizations they care greatly about. Those organizations that have done an outstanding job of thanking them properly and often, and where they feel their gift has been celebrated and used effectively. Donors become more selective in tough times. They choose organizations that demonstrate how much the donor means to those the organization serves.”

So go forth and do what we all do best!
