NYSDEC is warning farmers to be aware of the current and rapidly changing weather conditions. We are entering a very risky time for manure applications. The National Weather Service is predicting substantial snowmelt and periods of rain in many parts of the State. Rainfall on snowpack will saturate soils and creates a high risk for significant runoff.
For permitted CAFO farms, any emergency applications of manure must be made in accordance with their Emergency Action Plan and monitored for runoff. Discharges must be reported.
Interim solutions may be available on a farm by farm basis and should be discussed with an AEM certified planner.
