The Senate Committee on Elections, Election Process Reform and Ethics held a public hearing on Feb. 7th to consider these bills: SB934, SB935, SB936, SB937, SB938, SB939, SB940, SB941, SB942, SB943 which relate to various topics on the administration of elections that affect Clerks, Election Inspectors, Care Facilities & WEC. The Committee passed the bills on to the Assembly. The bills the Assembly approved are now in the hands of Governor Evers.
As what happens so often, WMCA is not made aware that bills affecting us at the local level are circulating which means we are not given an opportunity to provide valuable feedback.
The Legislative Communications and Advocacy Committee met on Feb. 28th to discuss next steps and the consensus was to write Governor Evers asking him to give WMCA an opportunity to weigh in on not only these bills but any bills that directly affect us at the local level to provide him with potential impacts prior to him signing or vetoing the bills.
We also agreed to send letters to our Legislators letting them know we are paying attention and would like an opportunity to weigh in. We will also outline the different election responsibilities between County Clerks and Municipal Clerks. Our final outreach will be to several larger media outlets with our message asking to be part of the process.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AND HOW CAN YOU HELP????
The speed by which bills move forward can be daunting, but YOU CAN stay informed early enough in the process by signing up to receive emails from the Wisconsin State Legislature at legis.wisconsin.gov by clicking on the “Notification Service” option. After creating an account, you can search for specific committees, proposals or topics and add them to your subscription list. You will then be sent an automatic email digest listing all the activity for items to which you are subscribed.
What this does is give you an opportunity to review the bill and be part of the process by contacting your representatives and the Legislative Committee members who will act on them.
