Griffith University Outstanding Alumni Award winners

A maternal health champion, Griffith's first Rhodes Scholar, a trailblazing accountant, and an international conservationist are the winners of the 2019 Griffith University Outstanding Alumni Awards. The winners, announced on Friday night, were selected from a high calibre field of exceptional alumni from Griffith’s four academic groups.

OAA winners 2019 overallDr Barry Kirby AO was a middle-aged chippie working in Papua New Guinea (PNG) when he witnessed a traumatic incident that resulted in the death of a woman in labour. It changed the course of his career. In that moment he decided PNG needed doctors more than carpenters and enrolled in a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) at Griffith. His outstanding achievements since then make Dr Kirby a worthy recipient of the 2019 Outstanding Alumni Award.

Dr Elizabeth Hamilton won the Outstanding Young Alumni Award for her inspiring journey on the road to global health advancements. Conservationist, Dr Hum Gurung, a man on an environmental mission was named the winner of this year’s Outstanding International Alumnus Award.

Griffith Business School's very own Dr Kerry Bodle was named the Outstanding First People’s Alumni Award recipient for her achievements as a prominent and highly respected First People’s advocate who is regularly called upon to speak on Indigenous issues within the accounting and financial services industries.

Free tax clinic proves popular with locals

Griffith-Tax-Clinic-studentsGriffith University’s free Tax Clinic is proving popular with more than 50 locals accessing the program in its first month of operation.

Griffith Tax Clinic is held at the university’s Logan campus weekly by 14 student tax advisers under the supervision of experienced tax practitioners. Anyone without a registered tax agent is eligible to take advantage of the free clinic – including small businesses.

Customers from refugees and new immigrants, women returning to work and even rideshare drivers have taken advantage of the service, asking general questions about tax all the way through to having their tax return completed.

Griffith University tax law professor Dr Brett Freudenberg said they recently helped one client who had not completed a tax return for half a decade.

Dr Freudenberg said the clinic had also run several workshops for community members. The next workshop "Tax and your home: Things to be aware of" will be held on Tuesday 1 October, 6.00 - 8.00 pm, at Griffith Logan campus. Register here
