  Dear Members and Friends,

As we step firmly into Spring, we feel a sense of change in the air.  We know that times are being tested and we feel a sense of duty to make sure that we keep our members informed and up to date as much as we possibly can.  Be it from a political, geo-political, bi-lateral and business perspective, it remains at the top of our agenda to inspire change and create new opportunities for our members and community.  We are encouraged by the strength of our relationships, and partnerships old and new, that enable us to deepen our own understanding on topical and relevant matters, but to also give our members access to vital information and contacts.  With that in mind, it is a pleasure to highlight the strength of our relationship with The British Embassy, and to introduce you to the Right Honourable Stephen Timms MP, Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy for Switzerland and Liechtenstein, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, who has kindly agreed to share a message to our Members.  Please read on to learn more and I look forward to seeing you at one of our many upcoming events in the coming weeks.

Kind regards

Caroline Rosenberger
General Manager

Timms

The Prime Minister appointed me Trade Envoy for Switzerland and Liechtenstein in August 2021. Since then I have been impressed by the closeness of our trading and cultural relationships, and by how much we have in common.  I want to do as much as possible to identify areas of further opportunity.

Switzerland is already the UK’s 10th largest trading partner (almost £35bn annually), but I believe the potential is a good deal greater.  My aim is to try to build trade up further.  I have enjoyed meeting businesses, making connections and identifying new opportunities for growth. To succeed, business must be firmly in the centre of my efforts, because businesses know best exactly what will enable companies to thrive.

I was therefore delighted to take part in March in the inaugural plenary of the UK-Swiss Trade and Investment Council, formed by the Confederation of British Industries and Economiesuisse. The Council brings together leading businesses and associations to advise the UK and Swiss governments on challenges they are facing and solutions they favour, and on how the bilateral relationship should develop.

The inaugural session began with supportive video messages from International Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan and Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin. These were followed by lively discussions on topics such as facilitating the movement of goods, service provider mobility, youth exchange and how to do more to allow our flourishing research and innovation sectors to collaborate. I was also pleased to see some BSCC members on the participant list.

I plan to visit Switzerland again at the end of May/beginning of June. I hope to explore these themes in greater depth on that visit, and look forward to meeting with many in person to discuss further opportunities.

Kind Regards

Stephen Timms
