REWARDHeat will demonstrate a new generation of low-temperature district heating and cooling networks, which will be able to recover renewable and waste heat available at low temperature

Focusing on the exploitation of the energy sources available within the urban context allows the decentralized solutions developed in the project to be replicated in cities across Europe

Demonstration Sites

With 7 demo sites, across 7 different countries, the REWARDHeat project will develop innovative solutions that can be replicated in urban environments across the EU.

Shunt at the Albertslund demonstrator

A shunt has been installed in the Albertslund demonstrator network, allowing the operator to lower/optimise the temperature in the housing area “behind” the shunt.

Project coordinator, EURAC Research, published an article titled "Fifth-Generation District Heating and Cooling Substations: Demand Response with Artificial Neural Network-Based Model Predictive Control" in the open access Journal Energies. The article was published in a special issue on Modelling and Control of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC&R) Systems and is available here.


REWARDHeat Webinars: Did you tune in?

Webinar on 5th generation district heating and cooling

As part of the DHC+ webinar series, EHP organised a webinar on behalf of the REWARDHeat project. The webinar featured presentations from the coordinator as well as the Heerlen and La-Seyne-Sur-Mer demonstrators. There were over 100 attendees and the recording is available here.

Heat Pumps webinar

Webinar on heat pumps

REWARDHeat participated in a webianr titled "HPs - Integral in District Heating", as part of EHPA's talk series. EURAC, the project coordinator, gave a presentation on the role of heat pumps in neutral temperature district heating. The event was attended by 193 individuals and the recording is available here.


Where can you see us next?

Sustainable Places 2020

We'll be at the SP 2020 conference taking place virtually on 28-30 October 2020. Join us and several other EU-funded projects for a workshop on integrating renewable energy into district heating and cooling networks. More info here.

Smart Energy Systems

We'll be at the Smart Energy Systems conference taking place in Aalborg on 6-7 October 2020. Make sure you catch the presentation from the University of Zagreb titled "Cost and Benefits of Shifting Towards Low Temperature District Heating Networks – Energy Planning Approach". More info here.


General Assembly

The first REWARDHeat general assembly took place on 23-24 April 2020. The event took place online due to COVID-19 travel restrictions and was attended by 45 individuals representing 27 project partners. The next general assembly will take place on 21-23 October 2020. It was due to take place in Toulon, France but will likely be moved online, due to the ongoing restrictions.


Project Boost

What is the potential for renewable district heating in your area?

Looking at the local or regional scale, what is the potential for supplying thermal energy through small district heating networks, fed by renewables and how can this potential be calculated?

In order to answer these questions, the ENTRAIN project has developed specific guidelines for developers of new networks that simplify the evaluation of renewable heat potential.
